Electrical issue?

RVH,

If you haven't already, give Big Dog a call and see if they may indeed have put some type of seal around the shaft in addition to the O-Ring that is indicated. Not sure but it makes sense as your tech was saying and if so, I would think that BD did something along those lines to prevent the issue.

Maybe something as simple as a lip seal behind the gear on the shaft. Do not have one to look at closely cut from the pictures it does look like one may be able to buy the proper lip seal and install and lessen that situation.

Let us know if you find out anything from BD. When I get a chance I will check with my BD Dealer SM and see if he has any input.

RVH,

Just talked to my dealer and they did have a starter seal kit to take care of the issues you have. He said it is a PITA to do, but the kit comes complete with everything including brake cleaner.

Not sure what your situation is with hte dealer or the tech there, but my dealer did say if you want, you can contact them and they can arrange to get you a seal kit or even rebuild if you wanted to send to them.

Your dealer and/or tech down there should be able to do it though or if nothing else the starter guy.

My dealer is Full House out of Winchester VA and their number is 540-667-0088 if you wanted to work with them for accuring a kit if the locals are not able to help you out. If you do call ask for Scott, he is the Service Manager and all their people are top notch and very good people to deal with.

Good luck and let us know what the outcome is in the end.

My 05 Ridgeback did the same thing. The problem was handled under recall. It was a bad oring seal and they all came with the wrong oring. To make it right with all the inner primary fluid inside the starter they change the starter and the oring, all under recall.

Thanks Fiber. I just called Scott and got the part #. I'll call my BD dealer tomorrow and see what they say about the kit. Talked to them already today about the situation. They say there is no recall on starters that they are aware of. I even sent him your breakdown view from this thread. Overheard his conversation with a guy named Jason who works directly for BDM. Jason told him I need to check the vent because thats the only thing that could cause pressure and force oil into the starter. Dealer/owner turned right aound & said they were at MB with the BD techs and they were putting in new starters right & left for no charge, chunking the old ones in the trash.

TJ, thanks for the input. Will let ya'll know what happens. If anyone has the recall notice, please post it so I can show these guys. Thanks gain to everyone for their help.

RVH,

Jason is right to the best of my knowledge. There is no recall for the starter, however there is a Technical Service Bulletine from my understanding and the issue that you describe is very well known and has been addressed by many dealers for the 2005 including mine.

Here is the info for the TSB:

Make / Models : Model/Build Years:
BIG DOG / BIG DOG 2005

BIG DOG / BULLDOG 2005

BIG DOG / CHOPPER 2005

BIG DOG / CHOPPER DT 2005

BIG DOG / MASTIFF 2005

BIG DOG / PITBULL 2005

BIG DOG / RIDGEBACK 2005

Service Bulletin Number : 1055
NHTSA Item Number : 10017541
Summary Description :
PRIMARY DRIVE FLUID SEEPING FROM THE STARTER HOUSING. *TT

Major difference between Recall and TSB. Recalls have to be done for listed vehicle, TSB need to be done for vehicle that show symtoms but if not, do not. Also many dealer will look up the TSB and do them anyway to be one the safe side but it not required unless symtoms show. Mine and many others did show.
