I posted my intro in the wrong area and a kindly moderator moved it for me so I didn't look too bad. You can understand that when someone wants info and advice and where to find parts but doesn't want to be part of our group...well, you know.
Welcome from Kansas, neighbor. I'm in Pittsburg (SE KS).
First thing is to be sure it's an original BDM speedo...many (mine included) poop out due to water and get replaced with a Dakota Digital. If it has been replaced, all bets are off.
I know the old BD dealers had software that could read the info stored in the ECH. I do not know if it srtores miles, but it could print out the minutes/hours that the engine has spent in 100 rpm increments, and how many times the rev limiter has been bumped, etc. I still have a printout somewhere for my K9 from Iron Lightning in Tulsa. If you could find a former dealer with that old software you could look at the archived engine data. I am confident Stroker's in Dallas could do that too.
Look at the overall condition...foot peg and handgrip wear, how perfect is the metal on the lower fork tubes? The front of the voltage regulator will tell volumes..it's aluminum and only 4" off the ground right behind the front tire...that little guy takes a real sandblasting....
Best bet is to ask around and find a good Indy shop and have him look at it. Do a compression test and look for oil seeps/leaks, and make sure it shifts right and the clutch is ok. I'd ask for a history, but at 3000 miles that's one oil change---a quick read. that's funny........it'll need tires, as those are getting kind of old--ask Tapio about that.
Good luck, and let us know--in case you buy it, remember we're fond of pictures too.
