Blow job for my EHC

Energy One

SKOGDOG

One of the old ones.
Th3 Infamous1 posted earlier that we had to use a hairdryer to get my bike started today and DentDude remarked about warming up the EHC. Obviously he has some experience with the issue. I am hoping DentDude will elaborate.
I am interested to know what other Forum members know about this issue.
My bike (2010 EFI Bulldog Bagger--bone stock) would not do anything when the key was turned. My radio had power, as did the power outlet (cigarette lighter), but absolutely nothing through the ignition.. We got a hair dryer and heated the electronics in front of the battery (modules, EHC, etc.), and suddenly the lights lit up and the bike started as usual and ran perfectly all day.
For those who have any experience with this, what do I need to expect? Am I likely to make it home? Does it just do this forever, or will it suddenly fail, or does it progressively degrade, what usually happens?
I appreciate your on-point observations and any experiences you've had.

I have been told that if it's really cold out that warming it up might help, but on the other hand I've also heard that heating it up could cause it to fail, I would replace it and save yourself some unwanted pain.

I was the one that had the cold start problem with my EHC, and told these guys about it as Cdoggy and Dentdude have stated above, weird as hell but baffled me until I sent it to Curtis to test it. Upon him doing the normal testing, he also threw it in the freezer and if the ehc gets under 55-60* there's a relay or circut that does not function until it is above 60*. The bad thing is there's nothing you can do to fix it unless you replace it. Of coarse you can carry a hair dryer with you to bring it up to temps when it doesn't start, but your better off getting it outta there and replacing it.

What decision/ symotons led you to the hair dryer.
Did the bike get wet. Just curious. It's already crossed my mind to talk to doc about a spare esc.

I can tell you from my personal experience, you turn the key and its completely dead, no lights no nothing period. I hooked the jump start to it and its still dead, no headlight no neutral light no nothing, dead.
I pushed it in the garage and after an hour or 2, I walked out to it in the garage and turned the key, and all was a go, fired right up. Then it happened when it wasn't that cold also, everything was dead even with a jump start. What was my next step you ask? I ordered the ESC from DOC which was the recommended replacement from Andrew (Bigdogtech01) and that was all I needed to hear.

You need to get ready to replace that EHC -- or ride only on hot days -- Both my K-9's failed in this method -- The first one when it did it on the road I actually used 1 gallon of HOT WATER poured over the electronics to get the bike to start. Replaced it right after that.

Hi SKOGDOG,
EHC 58 is mounted on carburated and EFI models between 2015 till early 2008.
Dont´know what harness control is built in the newer dogs.
Maybe a contact to Axel will be helpful for get more info.
can send u contact dates if u need.
In my case I thought EHC is my problem, end of the story was a defect right switchboard.
Think he´s a good choice and a Question cost´s nothing.

If the bike is dead and I mean dead, no lights or anything, its the EHC. You will still light up if its the hand control, won't start, but it will light up.

Look at the title of this thread and just think how long it lasts you. :)

I went with DOC's because he is only a phone call away if you need any help, I'm not sure the other two are that available.
:agree: Some of us are not that knowledgeable and have not installed many of these units, that's why customer support is very important in my book along with easy to read instructions:old2:

:agree: Plus I ride in some cold weather, sometimes just above freezing point, never had an issue starting since I got DOC's ESC..

Docs unit has been flawless for over 6,000 miles now, not one issue, NEVER used a tender since the installation, don't know much about axels unit, but I can say from personal experience Doc's is bulletproof!

One other thing is when I installed my ESC, I did the recommended waterproofing procedures that Doc suggests, every jst connection was cleaned and I applied diletic grease and shrink tubing on them, also took all the turn signals, speedo, headlight, license plate bracket and hand controls apart and did the same plus sprayed all pc boards with clear urathane, and to top it off it came with a new headlight harness and ceramic plug and I got the electrical charging fault light in mine so if my charging system is not functioning properly, my oil light doubles as a electrical fault light indicator. So as you can see, Doc covers all bases and for me was by far the best choice.

I've got close to 4000 miles on axles no issues no tender necessary I use one occasionally just to properly maintain battery but always during storage
I understand that Axel's unit is working fine "For You" but, all I'm saying is my personal experience is with Doc's, so he's been around a little longer and I am not into being a test subject for a new product, don't take it personal, I am only saying what has worked for me and apparently has worked for hundreds if not thousands of others, proof is in the pudding brother.

It's not axles first rodeo either in the motorcycle world he has done a lot with his engineering expertise, both I'm sure are great replacements I really like the warranty and ease of installation I'm sure most woulda went with axles had it been available sooner
I've got over 10k on the RIP II ehc replacement with no issues at all (except a bad ground wire -- not the RIP fault)
I went RIP since it was the unit Curtis was selling at the time for my EFI bike and Curtis has always done me right.
It was a far better replacement IMHO than the WP unit I used on the first K-9.

You know I am sure that Axel's is a great product as is the RIP II kit, when I was needing to replace mine I don't think Axel's was available yet and there were some guys having a few issues with the RIP kit so I made the decision to go with Doc's and couldn't be happier, :whoop::old2: I am sure that both other kits are great choices also, but as I said, all I know is from my experience, and you guys from yours! :old2: now I am sure we have confused the hell outta Rick, :oldcrazy: whatever you decide to do Rick, I am sure one outta the three will do just fine for you. :old2:
