Hey guys and gals I am in need of assistance. I bought a new outer primary vent and I have no idea where it is supposed to be installed. I am hoping that one of you will be able to assist me with the instruction of this vent.

I bought it from Donna and Derik and they said that it helps to keep the primary oil from backing up into the starter and that some primaries don't have them I am assuming the earlier DSSC primaries and that the newer models have them and if they get plugged up it could cause primary fluid to backup into the starter. Mine is an 05 and I don't see a vent but I have been thru two starters because of the primary fluid backing up into the starter.

Sorry I can't help you I wasn't aware of a vent on the primary. Something I'll have to check for and keep an eye on this trend.
Thank for posting.

Why don't you call the vendor you bought it from and ask them where it goes? Send you're nest starter to Wildsteedworx and he will rebuild it with the proper seals installed. Good luck

I goes on the back side of the inner primary cover between the tranny and the motor. If there is one there then your in business, just replace it, but only finger tight, the thread is very small and it don't take much to break it off. It should also have a nylon flat washer on it also.

Yeah I'm kinda with 6pack, I wasn't aware that it was supposed to be vented but I am aware that there is supposed to be a drain galley on the starter to release the fluid back.. that could very well be ur issue is that ur starter doesn't have that galley that the updated ones have.. jmo.. good luck!

So is that something they did in the later models? Or is that something someone just realized would help the problem? And I have looked on my 09 and don't see a vent on the inner primary cover, should it be there on an 09?
Yeah.. I dont either.. first I have hear of it..

agree with post #6. very short threads and easily cross threaded, cleaning it should be included in the normal maintenance schedule. without it, pressure can build up in the primary and force oil into the starter/transmission. if i remember right, the threads are undercut just below the hex-head and make it a little weak, there-by easy to break off.

It does have the washer on it. Thank you for your help. But I could have sworn that they said outer primary cover but I could be mistaken. So do they all have one mine is an 05? I will check today and if it doesn't I can't do anything about it I am guessing.

It should have one. I have not found a bike that didn't. Also need to keep an eye on the transmission vent tube, to make sure it's not plugged. The mud dobber wasps around here are so bad, that I make a screen to go over the end of it to keep them out.
