Lost Oil Pressure - ZERO

When i had this problem I rebuilt my pump. I removed all oil lines and blew them out with air just to make sure. Pulled the oil tank and cleaned it out. Once I primed the pump and started up I had oil pressure again. Been working ever since.

**Note** I kept having cavitation occur when I removed the check ball and spring filling it with oil. I had to prime the system using a clear piece of tubing attached to the oil supply line and a funnel and let gravity take oil into the pump while spinning the back tire. I removed the oil pressure gauge, relief, and check ball side of the pump. Let all that fill with oil and sealed her back up.

Must. I say you take off your chest cam. There's most likely a problem. On the gear from the crankshaft.

Figured it out...clip broke on the end of the oil pump shaft. Found it sitting at the bottom. Pretty much what I was hoping it wasn't from the stArt.

Looks like the woodruff key fell out and chewed up the gears a bit.

Time for a 585 while I'm in here.

For others you can see there is supposed to be a clip at the end of the shaft. Where I am pointing that pick.

Also it's hard to see in the pic. But the oil pump drive gear is chewed up.

Harley part #33-4230 is the replacement for that 24T. It's about $25 on fleabay

One of the old ones.
Yep--good work, E. wish it would have been something a bit easier to get at.....that little clip was a lot easier to get off than on as I recall.
Have you ever had the oil pump off? It was fairly easy to get the pump out, but to reassemble, I wasn't very skilled. I assembled the two units and insides of the pump body on the bench, only to find it would not fit as an assembled unit. So I had to grind down a corner of the pump case to allow it to fit back in as a unit. I hated that, but at least the ground off part is not visible....still..I think a maybe a neurosurgeon could reassemble the pump components on the engine.
Please keep us posted and show a few photos too, Eric. Or a how-to if you feel energetic.
Great thread, gentlemen!

Be EXTREMELY careful when installing the oil pump driveshaft clip.
I've seen failures from the clip being spread too much. That will let the key slide out of the shaft from the extra wide gap in the circlip.

That's what happened here John, key got chewed up too had to just order drive gear and pinion shaft gear don't want to run them as they are. Obviously along with a gasket kit for the oil pump.

Gear Part Numbers:
#33-4232 and #33-4230

Oil pump rebuild kit:
#31-6300

This oil pump is fucked the actual drive shaft Broke right in half! This was the cause of the whole issue!

It's stuck inside the oil pump

This is supposed to be sticking out a bit so you can get part #30 on/off.

Part #8 is what broke

Broken shaft inside the gear

Yea I'm looking and these HVHP gears are hard to find I can't actually find the one I need.

A new Jims DriveShaft is going to run me about $25.
I was able to find one of the two gears I need which is $41. I guess I'll have to call S&S about the other one.

Can't find Part #4 which on the HVHP pumps is part #31-6075-S. I could swap all the gears back to the OE style and ditch the HVHP gears I guess.

Or i got to an Ultima High Flow Oil Pump all new for $180.
