In my humble opinion if you use silicon on the splash ring that will keep the oil out of the starter in the first place. No need for a relief.

Spray silicon? or caulking?
A high quality RTV Silicon

I'm talking about adding silicone to the splash ring behind the drive gear. Put a light bead where the washer contacts the inside of the nose. You need to make sure it's centered right as the shaft will be moving.

You didnt by chance buy one of those eBay starters that were cut wrong, did you?
Interesting you mention ebay. Ebay does get a bad rap. I bought a BD starter from a well respected seller/BDB participant. The unit was well wrapped and clean. Great price too. I installed it and when the jackshaft snapped and I had it replaced, I found out why the price was great. The seller welded and cleaned up a broken jackshaft. I wasnt happy, but it was a great price. Now I have two starters that I can swap whenever one craps out. I keep one clean and ready to go. No downtime!

The oil will get behind the splash washer thru the ID of the plash washer where the shaft goes thru, correct?

A very little I guess? I thought about that too. It's not full proof but if you don't use silicone the whole starter would have to fill before it makes it back up to the splash washer anyways to push it self back out. That's the highest point of the starter.

Silicone keeps most out and with no relief it will force it back the same way it came in and less likely to leak around the gasket.

We shall see...my starter in my bike now has just silicone no relief hopefully I don't have to take it off again for a couple years but I'll document the inside.
