OK. I need some input form the pound...
I have been working with Ohmster trying to find out why my EHC looses power and shuts the bike down... What we have found is that the EHC looses power for more than 22ms.. this puts it into shutdowm mode. the power then returns and locks the ECH in a bootloder mode (like when your home pc locks up). all the led lights on the EHC light up, the bike quits, speedo freezes at the speed you are traveling and NO lights ie head,tail, dash, turn etc. Cycle the key and all returns to normal.

Soooo what i need is for a few of you to remove your seats and look at your EHC.. key on, press run and the red led for the ign ckt comes on.... NOW when the engine is running is this same led flickering? or is it still on solid?????

Mine is flickering with no pattern.. and i am wondering if the switch in the handlebar or the wiring to this switch is loosing a connection. Or if everyone else has a flickering light then it will be the ign switch... Thanks John

90% sure it should be on constant without looking. Voltmeter on your input from your handle bar switch and igntion switch should show you the culprit there. If nobody chimes in, I'll fire mine up later for you.

It stays on, however the vibration of the bike, which in turn shakes the EHC somewhat, gives it the illusion that it is flickering ever so slightly. The light never does go out at all however and if you raise the rpm's past the idle to smooth out the vibrations, even the flickering illusion should go away if everything is working fine. Hope this helps you.

From the service manual;
Page 6-24 states that the LED lights should be on solid and that if it's flickering it indicates a ground. The rate of the flickering determines the level of fault current in the circuit.
Page 6-27 states the Ignition "ON LED" powers the coil and goes on describing the wire colors and stuff so........

I would pull the tank or cover and coil cover and trace the coil wires back to the EHC and check for grounded wires. I've found a few on my 05 over the last year or two that caused me problems. My oil pressure gauge wire grounded and caused the light to be on all the time or flicker when I hit bumps hence the reason I got the gauge put on way back when.

Follow up. In your original post you mention the EHC loosing power. Then you go on to the Ignition LED. These are two different systems so you think that if you have a grounded coil wire which would give you a dying symtom could be the real problem instead of the EHC loosing power?

Just a thought. I would also check to make sure the three wires bolted to the coil are tight.

Check the continuity/resistance of the switch circuit with an ohmster meter. An older needle meter will show contact changes when you do button pushes better than a DVM. Check the key switch?

Well mine has a definate flicker... not an illusion... It has no set pattern or cycle to it... This is just something i noticed and thought i would check with you guys and see if it was normal... i did plug in another EHC and it still dose it.. I have checked the wiring from ign switch connector to EHC and found no problems.. BUT i did find a small jumper between the ign switch plug and the harness about 1 1/2 " long..

I sent this Pic to Ohmster and he said it was an 05 fix for somthing with the EHC... had a resistor in it.... and to remove it... and I haven't had good enough weather to get in a long ride so for all i know it might be fixed ... Thanks for the inputs so far... And lets see if any other guys and Gals have the flicker or not..

That pigtail was the early fix for the 05's. When mine burned down on the side of the freeway back in 04 they replaced all the electronics then put the pigtail in the ignition line up. When the EHC's were upgraded that pig tail was supposed to have been removed.
I posted on here a year ago that I discovered mine still in my bike and contacted the company and they told me to remove it. But, only if your EHC has been updated which mine had.

No, cause my newest one I got Nov 05 has the clear potting material so clear is not an indication of an outdated EHC. No problems after many miles on it.

That I can't Bro, sorry! In Daytona Ohmster looked over my system as I've posted before and said everything is good to go and I've had no problems with electonics in a couple years now (knock on wood).

But I do know that if you have the newer EHC even if it has clear potting it's okay. Some were saying that all bikes should only have black potting but thats not true as I've been told by the factory.

N8KAM, let me know what you come up with. My 05 Mastiff is doing the same thing. Local dealer, which as of weeks ago is no longer with us. said they didn't know why it was happening after three weeks in the shop and just ride it until it became more consistant. Glad they didn't have an issue with my Dog shuting down in heavy traffic. Because we all know those cages stop on a dime...

You are absolutely right Ray... :2thumbs:
I talked to Ohmster this evening and he explained that the resister is now internal with the new EHC (USB Diag connector) and that it should have been removed when the replacement was installed... :bang:
Also said the flickering LED is normal... and as gooddoggie said, it is almost solid when the rpm is higher... so just like the led's on the ign module it increases with rpm and is solid prior to starting... So we believe it is a faulty ign switch... they have also updated this switch within the past year...

Called Amy at BDM and she is going to check with the warranty dept and possibly send out the new one ASAP :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Tell Amy, who has always been a sweetheart to me, to sent that straight to you or arrange full throttle to send it to you. Especially with all the headache you have had with ACM replacing your EHC and not catching this. They are the dealer and they should have known better but sense they didn't you got screwed.
