what year cj do you have? gotta love jeeps!
1980 CJ7 . Spent last spring restoring it. Still have some stuff to finish wiring on the dash left to get everything working. Having trouble with the Speedo and temp sensor. Just replaced the temp sensor today that didn't help so now looks like I need to run new wires. The old PO hacked up the harness so I've had to rewire most of it.

Salt kills all vehicles! I grew up in Mass so I know what you mean been in TX for for 8 years. My truck I bought in MA and still drive it down here and I'd rather work on the 35 year old Texas rust free Jeep than my Dodge that is less than half the age because of the rust on it.

How did you get the air cover smooth? That looks really nice.

Started with an 80 grit flap wheel on a 4" grinder for most of it, then switched to a DA sander with 60 and 80 grit to get it all smoothed out. Think I'm gonna shoot some guide coat on and hit it with a flexible board sander today to make sure it's close enough for primer to smooth out any imperfections.

Put on a guide coat and blocked it out with 120 till it was perfectly smooth. Then sprayed 3 coats of epoxy primer. I'll let that cure and wetsand it down sometime during the week, hopefully be able to paint it next weekend.

That does look smooth:old2:
I can see I have a lot to catch up on if I'm going to try spraying my tank n fenders this summer.:oldread: Guide coat, blocking it, 3 coats primer and then wet sand, damn. Whatever happened to wet sanding with 220, red oxide lacquer primer, sand down with 320, tack and lay 2 piss coats, color coat and then the shine coat, never had clear back then:willynilly::whoop::old2:

Lol times have changed! Guide coat was just to see if it was a uniformed radius seeing as I was grinding on it. Wanted to get it perfect so I didn't have to use a skim coat of filler. But for this I'll be going primer, wetsand, sealer, base coat, intercoat clear, wetsand, graphics, then clear, and wetsand and buff if I get any dirt in the clear. After that I hope I like it over the chrome, if not it gets hung on the wall!

Fucking hell man. I guess you need the extra clear for the airbrushing?

I've always only done primer, sand with 220/320 basecoat and clear badda Bing! Lol

You can airbrush right over the base but I have to let the base dry enough to tape on it and I'd rather scuff up intercoat clear rather than the base.
