As mentioned, the big4 pump the freewheeler gears on the shafts so you can't coast. This will dry out the freewheeler and score the brass collar that is splined to the shaft. She heats up being static, the freewheeling gear is meshed so it continually moves. Only way to coast a big4 down a mountain is to keep the engine idling, or kill it and start it occasionally.... my MO.
There are a few common sense points of splitting in Ca. It' s all about safety.
I split in freeway traffic, time is time, gas is gas, more should ride and unclog the freeways.
I split up to a traffic light... as long as another car [think firetruck/ambu can drive thru on the far right side, etc., you are in no violation...[lots of traffic school questions]
I split up to that traffic light with dead engine... look left to right... eyeball the yellow, note the left turners in front of me have the green first, so I sit and wait with dead engine... no one is going to rear end me being in the front of the line between cars.
I split in the city streets sitting at that the limit line, knowing... no vehicles are going to time that light and run it, my peripheral at the yellow changing to red... bike is in gear... the green times in with my old drag racing days... I hit the start button... the torque on this fucking bike is an 8 second kind of 1/4 miler... shit, do I have yards of nothing around me in 3 seconds or less... LOL
And you should hear the nasty bark off the car doors when this engine revs up... it says, 'get the fuck outta my way... and stay back there... OR ELSE!'
The rest of you 48's are missing the boat. You should all make a split the lane day in protest across the country.
