The electrical Gremlin is attacking me!

You guys won't believe what's up now, so I have had my speedo doing some weird shit lately going off, coming on, going off again, fricking strange, anyhow I just figured that it's getting old and need's to be replaced, which still could be the case, so yesterday I am riding and all of a sudden for no reason the bike won't turn over, no power to anything, key on but nothing, I end up getting a tow (from out new member Bob! Thanks Bob!)home and I pull the bat covers off and look at the ehc fault lights when I turn the key on and they are all lit up and stay lit up with the key on, but still no power to anything, bat tests good, even tried to jump with my lithium jumper kit and nothing, so I am going through the flow chart and eliminating things and get to load testing the battery, well as soon as I put the multi meter on the terminals with the key on the fault lights went to normal! The yellow power light stayed on and the green light flashing, headlight cam on also, but no running lights or license plate light, but turn signals and brake lights work, so I pushed the run button and now the red ignition light comes on and the bike fires right up! Ok, wtf is going on? So I shut down and wait a few min and turn the key on and the lights look good on the ehc, same thing, headlight works but no running lights, try to start it and click, nothing and now all the fault lights are staying on again! Ok, so I put the M.M across the terminals and all the lights go back to normal again, put run and it fires up again! I am confused to say the least, the only thing I can think is the ehc is going bad, I checked the key by bypassing it with a jumper wire so I know I have it's ok, I uplugged the tail lights, tag light , speedo sensor, etc......even checked the green wire from the starter for voltage and it was good also, so now at this point what I have is everything works, it fires up but but I got no running lights or speedo at all, headlight works, turn signals work, brake lights work, wtf? I think it's the ehc, what do you guys think? I guess I'll just carry the m.meter with me so when it does it again I can re set it by putting it aross the terminals, weird! Anyway sorry for the long ass message but just wanted to explain exactly what is going on, thanks.

Yea, it is really weird for sure, but no running lights, yet the turn signals and brake lights work! I'm confused! It has to be the ehc don't ya think?

I know it's a pain in the ass but I think Curtis can test the ehc to know for sure, thought I read that somewhere before.

Yes Dave, unfortunately you are right on this one, nothing I can do but figure it out and move forward, even with all the problems I have had lately, I still love my bike and wouldn't have anything else! I'll get it figured out with the help of everyone here at BDB without a doubt!

Isn't there a way to reset the EHC by holding in the left turn signal button and turn the key on? Something like that.

First unplug the battery totally from the bike.... then plug it again and re-set the EHC, as AWG says, there is a way to re-set the EHC, just can't remember it now. Ask Curtis and post it here... I should have kept it myself I will try to do a search.... but since the new software searches here are a PITA..

Check your battery connections. Make sure not only are the battery bolts are tight and making good contact but check the ring terminals on the EHC power and ground wires. The contact of the meter ends might just be enough to give you a clean voltage to the EHC. Other than that it puzzles me why the meter seems to correct the issue. All the LED's lighting up on the EHC is a condition that occurs when the IC takes a dump in the EHC. If it stays that way constantly then you only have a chance to save it by reloading the firmware into it. To do that you need to be able to wipe the EHC clean before you reinstall the boot loader and firmware. To wipe it clean you actually need to have the EHC engineering software to do that which we have here and Curtis has as well.

Well there is a chance it might be recoverable. Not a great chance. I see about a 1 in 5 recovery success rate when trying this.

I had a friend with a Viper and it kept acting up and running rough, sometimes it wouldn't start, the dealer told him to disconnect the battery cables from the battery and hold both cables to the frame and it would dump the cookies stored in the computer. By damn it worked, car ran fine after that, so it seemed that it was storing too many different codes and this reset it, so to speak.
I wonder if that would be possible with the EHC? or is it not that sophisticated.

Well, lets see, I guess I'll start with, yes I cleaned, tightened all the grounds, etc., the battery is a Harley brand that's only 8 months old!
As far as the EHC it will be on it's way to Curtis tomorrow morning, he said the same thing as Jason except that he has seen more success than failure when resetting the EHC module so it's definitely worth a shot before spending six bills on a new system.
