Starter problems

Hi Everyone reading,
I need help! Yeah maybe that kind of help too! LOL
I've got a 2004 big dog with 3400 miles on it that I'm working on.
The bike used to turn over, now it won't.
Here's a list of symptoms related to the starter as they first occurred.

1) turn the key on and the bike starts to turn over by itself. (Doesn't do it anymore now)
2) turn the key on, press the run switch, press start, the motor turns over, bike starts, starter continues to try to start until I pull the green wire from the starter motor. ( Doesn't do it anymore now)
3) turn the key on, press the run switch, press the start switch, motor solenoid does not engage. Starter does not turn over. The headlight goes dim when I press and hold the start switch too. There is voltage going to the solenoid (green wire) from the EHC; It's like 6 volts though, is that correct? The Voltage at the battery measures 12.6 volts.
The EHC lights show one green and one yellow light.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

You probably need a new selinoid. Take the 3 screws out of the starter end plate, pull out the guts, clean with carb cleaner, spray with WD-40 and re-install. I'd do this first.

I'm a new dog here and having trouble on picking a new starter for my 2003 Pit Bull. I do NOT have a compression release on my bike and my starter took another crap on me. Can anybody help me on a good replacement starter. a 1.8kw or higher please

Hi gang!
I've got an update and it isn't pretty. My garage was robbed between the 13th & 14th of July in early AM hours. The bikes are OK. None were stolen! I've been busy dealing with that problem for the past three weeks. I'll tell you more in a minute.
The 04 dog still isn't running. The battery is fully charged; 12.8 volts. The starter circuit light on the EHC lights up then quickly turns off when I hit the ignition switch to turn the motor over. The motor tries to turn over but ever so slowly. Eventually the ignition fault light does not come on at all when pressing the starter switch multiple times. The starter is good. No problems there. There is very low voltage going to the solenoid. The compression releases do not click open so something is wrong in the ignition circuit. I believe the red light indicates a fault. Is that correct? Are there any fuses for the compression releases? If so, I can't find them. The only thing that I can come up with is that the EHC is toast. The only electrical troubleshooting reference that I have is from a 2007 manual. By the way Thanks again FRANCO for sending the 03 & 07 manuals! Very much appreciated.

Does anyone have any ideas??? Thanks ahead of time!

OK, I'll give the quick and skinny on the robbery cause this is the tech section. Lots of tools stolen; both mechanical and electrical. It hurt my V-twin business big time! Thank goodness this isn't my full time job!
Thanks

Sorry to hear about the rotten luck. I hope you marked some of the tools? Maybe it'll help to recover some of them incase the perp tries to sell them. Again, sorry to hear about the bad news.

Thanks Brew! Some of them were marked. Most were not.

This is an old thread but I'll just throw this out there for folks who are encountering similar problems.

My 1997 Proglide was built with an under-powered starter. It would often slip in a way that indicated that there was a solenoid of a starter clutch problem. The bike always started so I just lived with it. A few years ago I finally got tired of it and installed a heavy duty All Balls starter. What a difference!

It's also very common to have weak cranking issues due to a bad ground connection on the starter. Those connections loosen over time and get corroded.

To take a lot of the worry out of starter issues (I'm a long-time kickstart dinosaur) I installed a slam switch. This will help a LOT if you are ever having starter issues. The R&R process for the starter was actually a breeze. I also have a 2010 FXSTC and that same job is a nightmare. And there is no way to get access to a slam switch even if you install one because the oil bag is in the way.

Hope this helps!
