Obviously the Wire Plus Ignition Switch is a piece of crap .So i am wondering is there a way to use the Big Dog switch with the wire plus setup. Or is there another alternative out there?

Vernon,
You can use your BD switch to operate a 12v 25 to 30Amp relay. The big dog switch is more vibration resistant than the wp replacements.
Use Napa MPE AR272SB relay about $12
Connect the hot fused wire now going to the wp switch to the BD switch and also to 87 on the relay. Use #10 Wire to the relay and smaller to the switch if needed.
The other wire from the BD switch is going to activate the relay by connecting to 85 on the relay. Small wire is ok.
Connect 86 on the relay to ground with small wire.
Connect the W and BE/R that go to WP plug #1 Pins #1 and #2 to the relay terminal 30. Use big or #10 wire.
Do not try to mount the relay. It will not like the vibration. Buy the spade lugs a Napa as well when you get the relay. It is a simple circuit with the BD switch operating the relay with low current and the relay provides the power to the Bike. I would have done mine this way except I gave my BD switch to a forum member when I made the conversion. Give me a call if you have a problem.

Vernon, One of the members here used a switch that he bought at TSC or another farm supply store. It was for a tractor. You could probably do that without changing the coil cover or changing the wiring. I think it was a $7 or $8 thing. If that works we would all benefit. It could be two or three terminal as the W and BE/R still could be tied together.Good Luck

The best way to fix the p.o.s. wire plus switch is at tsc. it's a two prong switch for a 8n tractor. JJ has the number and I'm sure he will post it later. it actually fits around the coil without any grinding and covers the reamed out hole perfectly. it's under 10 bucks and only way to fix it properly.

X2. Just put one in and what a difference. All you need is a two wire ignition for a 39-64 Ford 8N tractor. I got mine at my local Atwood farm store. Anywhere you can find tractor or farm parts should carry the switch.:2thumbs:

I used the relay. Nice to maintain the stock key and switch.

One more reason to avoid WP.

Until you lose your keys!!! Mine kept falling out. I totally lost the first set and the second set fell out 3-4 times. That was enough to make me switch out the entire ignition. PIA trying to track down lost keys!!!:bang

Just find a place that sells tractor parts n ask for an 8N ignition switch. You won't need any part numbers. Simple two wire switch.

Key falling out

After I lost my first set of keys, I bought a spring-loaded belt clip with a key ring attached to it. I attach the belt clip to the rear cylinder plug wire. If the key comes out, it's still with you, dangling from the plug wire. Works great.

Here's the pic. Not that elegant, but effective. When removed, it has a double use when I clip it to my belt loop. I did just buy the tractor key just to see if it works -- 6 bucks on eBay.
