Broken Transmission Main shaft...

Energy One

Here are a few pics of what can happen to the Main shaft of certain years built Baker 6spd DSSC transmissions....
They were built during late 2004 - early 2006. The only way to tell is by checking the case number on transmission ( Right side on top ) or to pull primary apart and check end of Main shaft to verify the look of the treads (also see picture below)
Any questions about this, feel free to send me a message.
For anyone wondering what can happen if this fails..? In some cases, like this customers, the bike acted as if it was in neutral in all gears. But in other cases, if gears become miss aligned, it can and will lock rear wheel up no matter what speed your going. Just like putting full force on rear brake and not letting off!!
FYI...I have plenty of parts on hand still to rebuild these...

Broken Main shaft next to good one...

The Main shaft on LEFT is the GOOD shaft...The Main shaft on RIGHT is the BAD shaft...Notice the gap between the threads and the splines of the one on the Right...That's what your looking for...

Andrew,
An undercut like that is never a good thing, you say by checking the number on the tranny. What numbers are good verses bad? I have an 07, am I in the clear or were the tranny's built ahead of time.

Do you mean ALL Bikes from 2005- early 2007 have this issue??? :panic2:
It's all based on when the transmission was built. On the right hand side, top of the case near the chrome tp cover, you will see a set of numbers starting with a letter...write the numbers down and send them to me, or post on here.

Model year on bike itself ran from 2005- early 2007....write down all numbers and send them to me in a message.
Agree. I have an 07 K9 purchased in March of 07. Broke the main shaft on the way home fom Sturgis...sucked, but better than on the way TO Sturgis.

I have a 06 K9 and on mine the countershaft moved and got stuck in third gear. Sent the transmission back to Baker and they fixed it for free and updated the mainshaft. This was back in 2008. No trouble since. Good info Andrew :2thumbs:

Are 04's included in this? How late in the year are we talkin?
No, 2004 is not because they were using the LSD transmission up till then. When they switched to the 2005 model year RSD, that's when they had the problems. But the transmissions were built in late 2004 to be put into the 2005 model year bikes. This being because all new model bikes are introduced to dealers around August or September of the prior year. So the 2005 models were being built in 2004...Make sense?

Didn't see any letters, only numbers:

0236049

You said it applies to bikes from early '07 and my serial number is "5" so there was only a couple built before mine in that model year.

Does that tell you anything Andrew?

Dennis, yours was built in the first part of 2006. Like I have been telling others, to verify if it needs a new one or not, you will have to check the end of the Main shaft. Only because this is the cutoff year. It could have either one in that transmission. Because it was built at first part of 2006, it's very likely it has an old style in it. Sorry for the bad news.

I have an 05 Chopper, my main shaft snapped two years ago. As andrew stated "the bike acted as if it was in neutral in all gears". Could have been worse, I was going 55 when it happened.

Yes, it makes sense...it was built in beginning of 2005...meaning, unless someone has already replaced it, it has the old style main shaft in it.
