ITS NOT THE EHC, ITS THE CHARGING SYSTEM

Well after three different shops, a number of "former big dog mechanics", and a stack of time, I have a fully functioning K9. I hauled it from des moines, Iowa alllll the way to Ursa illinois, and let them have at it for a couple weeks. As it turned out, Steve the owner told me they had done a good number of EHC replacements, and a lot of times thats the case, but another common thing is the charging system failure. I was told by each mechanic in each case that "its definitely the computer and thats that." Well, the charging system was 350 dollars less than the replacement kit. See the charging system would have just enough to start it, then recharge a little bit, but when the computer didnt have enough juice, it would reset itself and die while riding. THAT BEING said, I have a new question. Before we went to pick the bike up, we drove to STL (gateway cycles) where my buddy picked up a 2010 ridgeback (EFFING SICK). I would like to swap my extensions out with his stock hardware, seriously how hard is it to swap these out? Will we have to swap breakline stuff etc? I'm not exactly mechanically proficient, but I dont want to just go fork over a couple hundred bucks to have em swapped out. Thanks

Unbolt, Bolt back on.
An extension came with the 2.5 extension kits. If thats on the one bike then it will need to go on the other bike.
Swap Shift Rods and your off and running.
Do you have a service manual?

Did you do the charging system or did they do it in Illinois?

Gun control is not about guns, it's about control.

I had them do the charging system in ill, because I'd never be able to figure that out on my own. I could probably figure out how to do the extensions, I just look at it, and am not sure about the brake line, where to take it off (i'm assuming right up next to the control) and then connecting rod for the shifter. I'm pretty much mechanically incompetent to be honest with you. i can ride the shit out of it, I just cant do much to it on my own.

I too am incompetent. I did my own charging system with the help of this forum. It was cake!!! If it fails again let me know. It was really easy. Took me about 2 hours and cost me $140.00 on eBay.

It is good that the one shop was able to figure out the problem and get you up and running. It is a shame that you took it to two others so-called Big Dog mechanics, or hell I will say any type of mechanic and they could nail the charging system down quickly. It is not that hard, especially for a knowledgeable mechanic. Even someone that is not mechanical incline can do basic trouble shooting to figure that out and one of the best places to get that help is right here on Big Dog Biker Group.

Glad that you are up and running for sure, but on a personal pet peeve, having turned wrenches since being about 10 years old, professionally and as a hobby, nothing pisses me off more than good people paying good money to so-called mechanic that cannot even due simple troubleshooting.

On the V-Twins including the Big Dog, even with a EHC, it is not that complicated, we are not talking about PLC on say a Pratt Whitney FT4A or Solar T 1000. As far as I concern with the typical MC shop shopping $60 and up for labor, such shops that throw a shingle up, get customers and such that do not have the proper needed tools, basic troubleshooting and overall are BS artist, should have their shop name posted so other can avoid spending good money after bad.

This forum is very great and there is so much within it for all old and noobie. Use the search function and most likely you will get the right direction to check things on your own. A good one from a while back on checking the charging system is here http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/how/24664-stator-check-out.html

Also recommend the number one place to start is to go to the technical folder with the sub folder of How To and start reading, many many pages of good advice with some great information to help all. In the immortal words of Gasman "Why pay someone else to fuck it up"

Like I said. I'm not a mechanic by any means but thanks to BDB I did my own charging system.

Not just headed in the right direction. The forum told me how to do it. I've also done other projects on my bike with the help of the form. It's probably saved me a couple thousand dollars. You guys are awesome!!!
