Has anyone ever had a bent wheel straightened?

I wish I had more money.
I got this wheel that hit something pretty hard and is bent in a couple spots. It didn't gouge, break, or crack it. Just wondering if I could just have it fixed and not but a new one.

Sorry. I didn't know my big dopey finger was in the way. Damn banana hands.

There are shops that specialize in repairing damaged aluminum wheels. I know of one in New Orleans, but you can probably google search something closer to you. Be sure to talk to them as some only repair car wheels while others will repair motorcycle wheels as well.

Me too

Hey Mike, I have something similar to your rim. My front rim was bent when I bought bike used 2 year ago. My rim has a hiccup about the width of a dollar bill.

I put a tube in the tire because it was losing air about every 2-3 weeks. Have not had an issue since. Front wheel does not shake or vibrate at any speed. There was no visible damage or cracks inside the rim when I added the tube. Just hoping the tube will keep tire inflated and not break the seal while riding.

That shop that you linked to would be the next step for me to have it repaired if it became a problem.

Good Luck on the outcome.

take it to someone that has a tire machine to hold it and beat it back inline with a 4lb mallot. I used to straighten steel car wheels this way.

I might would give it a go but the bad one is bad. There's no way the tire would even touch the bead.

If I can't get it fixed I just might do that too. I only have a three pounder though!:D

Mike:
I am on my third front rim from hitting NJ finest pot holes. I showed it to a few wheel guys and they said the labor was more then a new wheel. I got a great deal on a new one from bigdogpartskingpin. Give them a call and see what they can do.

Aluminum doesn't take a pounding like steel. You'll crack or chip it if you're not careful. The repair shops use heat, but only a certain amount as it doesn't take much to melt aluminum. If I was going to try to repair it myself, I would get a bottle of MAP gas and heat it up, then take a large cresent or pipe wrench and bend it back, not beat it back. Good luck.

If you have access to a press you could make a jig in the shape of the rim and press it back to shape. As Brad said, aluminum doesn't like to take a beating. Personally, i would bite the bullet and spring for a new rim.

What about rigging something with a small bottle jack and some 2x4's? Up agaisnt a cement wall? So you can try and apply the pressure in the correct spots.

I might do something along these lines. Make a rack with a bottle jack put the wheel on the floor use the jack like a press. I actaully have MAP gas. Ill heat it and use the jack with a 2x and try to press it back. At this point I've nothing to lose. It's bent in two spots on one side. I've called around and now ody wants to mess with a spoke wheel. Ill give it a go and let you's know how it pans out.

Might work. Only problem if it fails at high speed, where will Mikey end up?
