2006 K-9 stock cam is ???

I've been all over the forum looking for an answer and have had no success. Does anyone know which cam SHOULD have came stock in my 117? Current dyno numbers with 'unknown' cam - 104/112. Mods: G-carb with ThunderJet, Vance & Hines B/R, D&M A/C.

I'm riding the fence over upgrading to the S&S 585 or Woods 590 (assuming the stock cam isn't already in the 580-range), however, have seen 'vibration' reports on the 590...thoughts?

Lastly, any suggestions on the install (of the 585)? I've read the install is relatively simple, basically a PNP. I'm not an engine mechanic, although, I am familiar with a set of wrenches.

I've seen others report higher TQ with the 585, just curious if I should upgrade or stand content with current power/reliability.

The bike pulls hard...especially compared to anything from a MoCo LBS. Startability - never sees 'enrichener' except below 60 degrees. MPG - in the low to mid-40's. Really, no complaints...just want what most all of us do - more power.

If you have the TP rocker boxes your cam should be a comp cam with .569 lift. My 08 had a S&S with a .546 lift. I switched it out for the Woods .590. I believe it is the W8. Lots of folks are using the S&S .585 which is a good cam as well.

V, thank you for the reply. It appears the rocker boxes are S&S being they have 6 bolts each (read in the forum TP had 4, with S&S having 6 bolts).

What are your thoughts on the Woods you installed? I've read and been told the quality of the Woods is unmatched. The only negative I read concerning it was a vibration following install.

Then I believe you also have the 546.

No more vibration than the stock cam to me. The Woods has less duration and is supposed to create more cylinder pressure for torque. I think the S&S .585 will pull more on the top end.
Since you have the S&S rocker boxes you might want to pull the top just to see what springs you have (there were some changes being made at this time). But regardless of what springs you have either cam should work.

Gentlemen, thank you for the replies!

Barhopper - I'm curious on the ride-ability/street-ability of the 650 you have. More specifically, is the 650 a good option for the street or is it targeted for the drag strip?

Knuckles & V - I called S&S Technical and they asked for the numbers off the case. They said the kit was shipped to BDM with the (as you both mentioned) .546 cam, yet mentioned that BDM 'could' have installed a different cam. I'm thinking, in terms of economics, they would have left the 546 as delivered as opposed to opting for another.

Again, thank you all.

My 06 K-9 had the Comp .569 cam and the red stripe .640 springs in it....when I had my rocker boxes, heads, and valve train switched out to S&S...I had them put in the S&S .600 cam...had this done about 3 years ago...bike runs great...and it was like day and night compared to the stockie  bike pulls nice :2thumbs:

I've spent about 4 hours reading all the posts i could find about cams....

my 06 K9 has TP rocker boxes.. this means I have a comp .569 cam in my bike?

It pulls very strong... but again... I never did ride another Dog... If in fact I do have a 569... would it be worth it to go up to an 585? or the difference is more noticeable going from the 546 to 585 only?

I know I know.... many threads here, I am just trying to figure out if my bike has the 546 or the 569

francoblay1-- I am right there with ya. Kinda sitting on the fence too? Is this worth going from .569 to .585 and will it be enough of a change to notice. I have the TP rockers and have the .569 in on my 06 RB.

Call S&S and give them the id number stamped on your engine. They will tell you everything you need to know about your engine.

I'll bet its the Comp .569. If your bike is runnin good and ya got a good exhaust and intake I'd say ride on. If ya upgrade the cam you might want to look at a ignition upgrade to get the most out of it. And will you run into a problem with the TP boxes on your existing cyl heads over time? Who's to know?

While getting some work done at Strokers early last year I found out that I had a 569 comp cam in my 06 Ridgebaack. Also found out I had the red stripe springs. I change the 569 out for a 626 Red Shift cam. Cam is for two-up riding. Pulls real hard, lots of low end torque and also 5th and 6th gear. I like the cam and I just tried it because a guy at Strokers had the cam and told me that I would be pleased with it. I still have my 569 just in case.

I've been dealing with basically the exact same dilemma. Mines is an 06 k9 I have t&p rocker boxes and rollers a 569 cam and s& s recommend a pretty big swap out. To begin with they said I should change to s&s boxes and covers, cut jugs 40 thousands to increase compression, get s&s roller rockers, and put in a 585 cam. They said that'll bring me to 10.2 to 1 compression and I'll have 125 horses and 125 torque. They stated that's how the motors were intended originally from s&s but big dog had to meet emissions. They also stated that there 585 was better cam then woods 590. Of course woods begged to differ saying his 590 w6h would blow any cam away from low to midrange. So I'm just in the dark about what cam to go with. Once I decide that then I can proceed with my winter build. I'm hoping more guys in the know here will chime in a little more indepth.

There's a lot to read if you search about TP rocker boxes/roller rockers. If you have the available cash, I would make that my first change. Go to S&S rocker boxes/roller rockers. While there, I would take a good look at the valve guides and as cheap as they are, go ahead and replace them if there is any sign of wear.

Any more info/opinions about this subject?

Franco I would consider upgrading to the S&S rocker boxes and the programable ignition. Upgrading from a .569 to .585 may not be that noticable when u still have the stock TP boxes and stock ignition.

Been awhile since I've visited this thread - I see it's had activity. As mentioned, calling S&S provides valuable information on any S&S motor, just have your engine serial number before you call. S&S's number is 608-627-1497, Al's extension is 1241. BDB member Franco and I have been chatting up the CAM topic and I thought I'd share what I ended up doing.

Contacted Chris and Al at S&S regarding my motor, they told me everything I could know about it...in addition, suggested cam options regarding to a stock or compressed motor. My build went from cam swap to: cam swap, compression, heads, ignition, exhaust, etc. Ended with Woods 650 cam, RB Racing 2:1, TH ignition, 11:1 compression...and this thing flies! I felt the bike pulled hard (up until 4500rpm) before the build, now the bike cannot be compared to what it was. Tq at 145, hp 125/130-range. I've had the bike on a few different dynos...and I probably won't do that again. The shop who did the build (Gateway BDM, St Louis, MO 314-291-6333, ask for Tim, tell him you got the info from me if you'd like) has an in-house SuperFlow dyno and these guys do a great job. When these bikes (in my experience) are running stock compression and emission cam, they seem to run out of steam as I've pushed them into the r's. The build I have now, the engine just doesn't stop pulling! When I rode the bike home from the shop I was intimidated (and I've been on this bike since it was new) by it thinking 'this thing is no longer streetable'. My opinion, and experience with this motor, has changed.

Looking back, I'm glad I decided on the compression increase, et.al., over a cam swap. I know this isn't what everyone wants so please don't be offended by my statement, just my opinion and experience from my decisions. If you have or locate a shop you and others trust, I'd lean on them and their advice...in addition to the great advice from the numerous members here on BDB Forum!!! Without all the members here on this forum I'd likely still be trying to determine which cam I had...thank you to all!

Regards,

Corey
