Dude S&S carbs are easy to work on, go to there website and download there manual on it,it will help you out.....Sounds like its time for a rebuild, Also pull off air cleaner assembly, and look inside throat of carb,ROLL threw the throttle while watching the fuel spray pattern from accelerator pump, should be a nice "Cone" shaped pattern bud,ANYTHING other than that, you will have all kinds of driveability issues.......

Also whats your plugs look like.....how are they burning......and take a fuel sample as well.....last but not least....VERIFY you have NO Intake leak......If you rebuild your carb, check all that stuff, you should be ok then!!! Goodluck bud!!!!!!!!

If it runs with the choke on it is because it bypasses the pilot jet, your pilot jet is most likely just clogged, pull it out and spray some carb cleaner in it then compressed air to clear it out, if that wont open it up try a strand of wire to push the obstruction through!

Interesting scenario as mine has similar issues but only at high speeds and when opened up, like in 70MPH+ and wide open, other that it runs just fine. I think Dan here might be on to something of my issue, I will check. Please report back with your findings, as I will.

Kim, not to hijack the thread, but yours sounds more like an intermediate jet issue. Generally, it only occurs when transitioning from one jet to the other. Most fixes occure by increasing the intermediate jet to approx a .31. Now, back to our regularly scheduled thread.

Old thread I know. Just wanted to update you guys. I let the bike set so long that it wouldn't start. Took off the carb and it was nasty. Cleaned it up real good, bike runs like a top. Clogged jets!

Thanks for updating this thread John!! :2thumbs:

There's way too many folks join the forum just long enough to get answers to their questions or cheap (free?) parts for their ride. Then, once they've got what they want, you don't hear from them again until the next time they need something!

Thanks again!

Mine was doing the same thing, popping dieing out without the enricher on etc. so took carb out, clean, noticed some gnarly looking rubber washers for the breather unit, shrugged, put it back on , and the bracket was at least 1/4" away from the carb face......

Hrrrm took rubber junk out of the picture put it together, butts up nice ran great... problem though metal on metal, went to H.D place by me .... who wouldve thought 6 washers would cost $8! Any hoo put it in, adjusted the idle runs like a champ.

Thanks for the update, a clean carb is a happy carb. I have done some headway with my issue as well and it's the ice cream looking airfilter that causes mine. I'm in the process of mounting a stock airfilter setup as soon as I have all the parts but will modify the front plate to a mesh with a diffuser kinda foam behind it. I also just found out that my carb is an XXX carb...... With good help from forum members......

The only thing I can add to expertise of the members already chiming in is I use the no residue electrical spray for cleaning the jets and accelerator pump and this usually keeps me from having to tear the carb completely apart, good luck.
