stuttering at speed

When you say the bike cleans up when you accelerate away does not sound like it needs more jetting. Possible the front plug is fouled then cleans up. It may be on the verge of fouling? What is the compression on both cylinders? Swap plugs. Better you change to new ones to eliminate the wire variable. You say it cleans up when you move off of sustained cruise, so if it was the wire, I would think if bad, would it not make the bike worse as you take off? So, maybe not the wire yet? Maybe a compression first so you do not foul another plug again?

Hmmmm ok so im confused. Ya wasnt hard to do! LOL
Should i switch plugs?
Do a compression test?
Wires?

Please try explaining again....
Old dog i agree if the back is running leaner it would be brown as the front is running fat aka black! Ideas to correct? How do i match them up? Front could be stuttering due to overfueling? so go down on int jet?

no...back cylinder is running hotter...so leaner...no air flow to rear.
Gotta tell my evo engine that. I could not tell who came out of whom, they are moka latte in color. If we took a twin engine, moved it 90° to the wind... Now explain one cylinder getting hotter and the like... are we pushing a fallacy?

Explain your way out of that engine at full face. Say there is this heat sink? Does the heat sink stay cool on one side of the... We catching that ain't the way to diagnose that black plug?

Something is wrong is my observation about room temp of parts on the table and leaks and/or compression variables chasing two different plug colors. For argument sake; If we know how much each cylinder sucks out of the carb is equal, it says equal heat. Both heads made the same heat for argument sake.

I do not buy how you ride in the wind and now no wind got behind the rear cylinder? I could not light a match at the back of your leg, is the cool fresh wind about to blow that out?

:hi:

Thanks Sven...i think... not sure what you mean by the " not buy how you ride in the wind and now no wind got behind the rear cylinder".... the rear cyl actually was running CORRCTLY as brown on the plugs.....
Obviously i dont follow what you are trying to say. Sorry...

You have to read my stuff over and over. It is not confusing, it is condensed.

Yes. Do not reread my penmenshithe guy's got it!

WATT? You either do it or I'm going to start laughing with you.

Bad valve guide leak? Too much carbon?
1. Plug is wet = Oil fouled ~ Rings/guides.
2. Plug is dry, particles are black with soot = As dry to the touch, drawith it.
3. Plug is gas fouled like low compression = Wet, but better look quick. Does gas evaporate kind of fast?
This just touches what the plug is doing.

How do i match them up? Front could be stuttering due to overfueling? so go down on int jet?
Transition is both low and main jets sucking out fuel. You say you take off fine. How about just change plugs first. If that takes the stutter out, it says plug fouling:

A. Compression says: I'm going to have good compression, do not look here, I read book perfect as does the other cylinder matching compressions. If we are 10% off between percentages, I have a problem like one cylinder has kennel cough.

B. Valve Guide says: I am like a carb jet. Bet me I do not suck oil down the valve guide at every intake stroke, bet me. I may be adding to the fouling of said side.

C. The Squid's Golden Rule: Oh ufckQ! I'll never check compression first, I rather chase my tail than listen to you, you wit that attitude.

YW. Gotta look at that engine blowing in the wind no matter the position or it will mess you up chasing plug color.

It does not matter what side cylinders in this case. If both burn equally, then something else is wrong internally/externally; in either cylinder.

There is the confusion [one gets caught up in], someone calling the rear lean or whatever wives tail they parrot. You just proved my point. Rear runs lean is not how you diagnose, if your turn the cylinders toward the wind is someone pissing against it.

OK...did as instructed. Checked compression on both cylinders. Both check out great withing 4% of each other.
Now gonna check for vacuum leak by intake?
getting another set of plugs also. Got the champions in as factory at 40thou gap

Do you have the taz carb...just thinkin maybe the accelerater pump or fuel bowl..i've got same issue and was reading on xxx site there was a fix for 2000-2500 stumbling ....don't have time to call bob today but curious what it is...just a thought...

Reduce the plug gap to about .035, forty is to much. Or better yet go with the E3's, you don't have to set the gap.

My 04 ridgeback has started doing the same, almost seems as though you're running out of gas. Spits and sputters then catches up to itself. I had to get my tank relined cuz the green liner was flaking apart and clogging my petcock. I have also replaced the accelerator pump in the super G. Also completed the 374wire mod. Never has a problem unless the ambient temp outside is above 90deg. I'm like you, I'm beyond frustration. I'm going to go with plug wires and possible coil and plugs for now. Thanks for your posts, gives me other avenues to go down.

No prob ourode12. Changed out to twisted wires today. Have the thunderheart on it so dont think it will give me problems....i hope. Hope it cures the stuttering also. When i pulled the old wires off to front wire (black plug) seemed to come off the coil fairly easy, so i'm wondering if it was loose and not getting full spark to the front cyl causing the black plug.... We will see shortly.... when it gets warmer! LOL....weather sux right now!

ps: let me know if you find out anything....

OK...so had a ride today after i changed plug wires and check for vacuum leaks. The twisted wires work fine with my thunderheart. Still got the stuttering at 2700-3000 rpm at various speeds 50-90mph....
So i figured i would try something and lifted up on the choke (enrichment lever) n it seemed to come out of it. Therefore with my logic i would think i need a bigger intermediate as it is starving for fuel during the transition from int to main jet due to it cleaning up when i add choke.
Thoughts?

I've put a 40,36,35,34,33,32,31and even 29.5 intermediate inand bike did change just didn't get rid of the stumble (transmission fron inter to main) thinkin it gotta be the rt combo with air bleed bein really important....also there all xxx taz carb....thinkin that big purple emulsion tube is messin with the airflow....just a thought......anyway good luck let me know outcome as I wll you.....

LOL thanks stlmikie! Well, im not sure yet.....
I feel kinda dumb n here is why.... ya im sure there will be a lot of comments here!

As i stated earlier that when i stumble during the transition i lift the choke and it cleans up.... BUT my plugs still show something different. The OPPOSITE actually! Brown on the rear and black on the front...telling me that i am RICH NOT lean!
I just talked with BOB at XXX and he seemed to think rich also and recommended a main of 74 (from now 76) intermediate as 31 (now a 32) and airbleed 70 (now 62). He seemed to think the larger air bleed would help the transition and the closer main/int would be better too.....
Damn this is confusing! So why would the choke seem to help if i was running rich! I get if i am lean during the transition, but wouldnt black plugs indicate RICH.....so how did the choke help smooth out the stumble at speed!

For me, with k&n intake. Was doing the same thing. Had to block the ram air coming in and went uo about 4 sizes on main jet. Dont know exact size cause i drilled up the old one. Try blocking front of filter when you start having the prob again. Good luck!
