COIL QUESTION

can anyone tell me how to tell which post on dyna 3ohm dual fire is positive
no positive or negative markings on coil. or does it matter which side is positive

It does not matter if you make the coil face out/face in/right side up/upside down. The coil is basically one wire in, one wire out. It does not care if you posi(+) at the one peg, it fires that side first. If you stuck the hot wire on the other post, it would send the first fire on that side of the coil.

So, it sort of matters who fires what side out of the spark box, meaning. The sanfoo is so easy of a combo to swap wires 2 ways. It goes something like this:

1. I have a backfire on start up = Crossed wires.
2. I can; cross my spark plug wires = I'm timed.
3. I can clean up the crossover of the plug wires = By swapping the two color wires at the spark unit out to the coil side is switch those.
4. No matter how I position the coil, I either misfire with my coil wires or I am timed at the spark unit the correct way.

That's incorrect Sven. A coil has a primary AND a secondary winding of wire with the trigger wire in common. Three wires, two positives and one negative (trigger).
It does not care if you posi(+) at the one peg, it fires that side first....I am timed at the spark unit the correct way.
I think you're thinking of a single fire system Sven, the '02 uses a duel fire (both plugs fire at the same time) so there is no "fires first" or "fires second".

I'm sticking with my original answer...

Thanks for the answers . so if I under stand this correctly either side could be positive.and it would to no good to swap post to correct backfire thru exshaust

You didn't mention anything about backfiring. You need to explain a little more of your problem please. When is it back firing? Just sitting idle or when riding it? You might have your plug wires crossed...just saying

True, as long as the red power wires are both on the same post.

In one of his original posts he mentions backfiring and llights blinking at 3K RPM.

If he's got the original duel fire ignition on the bike both plugs fire at the same time so you can't really put the plug wires on wrong.

You DO have the stock ignition on your bike, right CR?

Sorry Dennis, didn't see the post about back firing. Might be his cam sensor shorting out and getting ready to give up the ghost. Might want to take a look see...:D

BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH CAM SENSOR ..i THINK FOUND BADGROUND UNDER IGNITION MODULE FIX THAT .. BUT STILL BACK FIRING ON ACELERATION TRIED TIMING NO DIFF. yes dennis still stock ign. tomorrow I believe I'll try bypassing EHC and go hot wire to switch jump wire to coil see what happens

is this right steps
1... remove hot wire from Ehc to coil and switch
2...hot wire from bat. to switch jump from switch to coil with feed to ing. mod.

This check will eliminate your coil. If it checks good then you know it's not your coil so don't spend the money. One thing that comes to mind is you mentioned you replaced the plug wires. Are you sure you got the proper wires for your scoot? These things can be very fussy when it comes to plug wires also.

IGNITION COIL
• Electrically, rarely an issue. Typically, most electrical issues are due to poor
connections/crimps and broken wires. May crack at mount due to vibration on 2002
models. A reinforced coil cover will fix this problem.
• To diagnose, if by removing yellow wire and momentarily touching ground jumper to
negative post does not force a spark and all connections are known to be good, check primary and secondary resistance. If out of spec, replace coil. If in spec, check for bad plug wires and plugs.
Primary resistance: 3 ohms
Secondary resistance: 12,000 ohms

Should work... just make sure to double check your connections and poloarities before you fire it up!

thanks rob good advice not sure about wires is what local shop said would work. did check coil against new coil primary & secondary very close

Check the resistance on your plug wires and see if they are both similar, some wires have been known to come from the store spliced bad. I guess I'm grasping for straws now!

thanks every think is a guest now.. rob you dennis help means alot to a shad tree mechanic like me..
maybe I'll get lucky and find problem before I give up and bring it to shop

Mike,

If you end up taking your bike to someone, I recommend Coyote's in BR. From what I hear, the old school owner knows a lot. I know a bike builder (writes for the Horse magazine) who uses him and another BD owner (doesn't know much about his bike) who goes there. I plan to visit him one day but I don't take my bikes to anyone to work on.
