Question: The unit that I am looking at is for a 0 degree off set(300 tire).Does anybody know what I have to do to make it work on a 250 tire 1/2 in. off set?
Your 2006 Mastiff requires a .500" offset>We can supply you a unit that will bolt on with no mods in widths of 2.5-3.00-4.00 & 5.00",also with or without outboard bearing support.

The 0(ZERO) Offset on the BAKER Belt Drive is ONLY FOR 300mm Tires.
The Offset for the 250 mm tires is built into the inner primary plate.
BAKER Synchronous Belt Drives have 14mm tooth depth & Hardened Stainless Steel Pulleys -and are quiet ,strong and have a better torque coefficient than an enclosed primary produces.
The BAKER Synchronous Belt Drive has better contact in the peaks & valleys of the pulleys along with the deeper 14mm tooth depth(the ONLY One made like that)- which equates into less noise-better belt contact & NO pulley wear.
Aluminum pulleys are prone to Wear and can cause belt "lag" and thats the reason why BAKER Uses Stainless Steel Pulleys
Less Heat equals longer clutch wear and better performance - and an openn primary creates/produces Less Heat on the Clutch and other areas.
The clutch that the BAKER comes with is practically bulletproof - and Big Inch S&S Motors like the one on our BDMs come with wont harm or hurt it.

I only use BAKER Primarys and Transmissions -Drivetrains-they are the Finest Made units I've ever used. And dont be fooled or disappointed by the 2.4" wide belt. its plenty strong & produces less drag than a Real Wide Belt.Yes alotta people like the look of a wider belt-and thats ok on something for show-but a wider belt doesn't correlate into a stronger belt in terms of strength or wear factors.BAKER Drivetrain for me & My Customers:D

Good write up Vince. I was looking at the Baker 2.4" belt drive.

I have looked into putting the Baker on my chopper but my mechanic asked me why? Well it looks good. He asked me what cools better OIL or AIR? My responce was OIL. Then why go to air? What is the bennifits other than looks? With my Chopper I have a 250 rear tire so what Open primary and belt size should I look at? Ya'll have suceeded in me looking back at the open primary again!!!!

OK, just got off the phone with Scott at Baker. The Baker synchronous drive will not work because the 2004 requires a 1'' offset. Remember this is a left hand drive bike. Primo offers a 1'' offset open primary drive for left hand drive bikes. Anyone had dealings with this?????

One of the main advantages of the BAKER open primary/Synchronous Belt Drive is superior strength of the inside & outer Primary Housing,Stainless Steel Pulleys(that wont wear or deteriorate under torque and extreme use) and a Stronger Clutch,Clutch hub, basket & plates that will deliver more torque - as well as an outer bearing support for the transmission mainshaft & engine pulley.
Your stock primary doesn't have an outer bearing support-so that there is a good reason to run an open primary w/an outer bearing support alone.
Less *flex* in the transmission shaft & opposing engine crank pulley results in a stronger engine to drivetrain mating-and your transmission shaft will love you for it:D
Oil cools your clutch -yes I agree 100%....but an open primary with a set of kevlar plates runs cool too, fluid works well but a properly designed open clutch does just as good a job if properly designed & maintained.

Primo (or is it BDL...?-I forget) has a 2 piece inner primary-I dont care for that design(it's not necessarily bad-I just prefer a 1 piece unit) ,but you may have to opt for that because of your LSD transmission, and the choices in an Open Belt Drive for that particular bike are limited.

I've installed Primo & BDL on too many bikes to remember-they work OK and are priced accordingly depending on where you get em -but in all honesty most of my installs using that belt/primary have been on Harley Davidsons with nowhere near the Torque Capacity & Horsepower Output of your S&S Engine equipped BIG DOG:2thumbs::D

I have the BDL top fuel on my AIH.

It has the one piece motor plate.

The clutch is large diameter.

There are lots of fibers and plates.

It will hold with 6 of the 9 springs installed so the lever pressure is very liveable.

Yup....:Dso it's the Primo unit with the 2 piece inner primary that Vince is *not fond of*....Thank You for the reminder-since I have "sometimers"(alzheimers....:D) when I've installed so many of the units were talking of/about that I cannot keep track of-so villify and burn my worthless ASS at the stake like the Cretin that I am:D
All Good Dude...Thanx for reminding me:D

Me too, I was seriously considering the Karata but the engine plate is so much cleaner on the Baker. Just looks like it was made for the bike as it was.
The outer bearing support is called a dogbone on the Baker Belt drive~and it IS a very unique and mechanical looking unit.
I'm no machinist but it's a very clean and sleek design-and I dont need a fuckin treadmill or obtrusive/large belt since it's of no advantage over a thinner belt according to the guys who make the primary I bought.

(Got that from Bert Baker himself on the phone before I bought my belt drives from Vince81)

On my BDMs it fits & looks perfect like it was made to go there over the stock DSSC primarys they come with.
Baker has a superior warranty, customer service & dealer network-so I chose that over the competition and I'm glad i did.

I agree. Yeah I wasn't referring to the "dog bone" I was talking about the metal plate behind that is up against the bike. Thought it was the engine plate. Either way that part just looks so huge and out of place on the Karata to me. No offense Karata guys. Each to their own:cheers:

Primo 2 piece motor plate sucks, they should stick to making hoagies. I'd rather work on an open primary any day of the week, the whole thing comes apart in like 10 min and you could do it on the side of the road with hand tools. Everything is right there for you to see, no oil to mess with, no leaks, etc and it will get you laid and isn't that the number one reason to do anything?

I'm sure we will see a surge of open primary sales now :eek:

aldog, i can answer cause i got one.... the answer is nope, very little or none at all. i just called baker and talked to them about that because i like the whine. they told me if i wanted whine, go buy a junk primary. they said it has to do with the machining. i went with theirs because they give you a 5 yr warranty.
hth, tim
Great Reply Dude. You want whine....?buy some cheese and try to talk that good lookin gal outta her dress without springin fer dinner & a movie:D

No in all seriousness...I just had 2(TWO) BAKER Belt drives installed on my 06 & 07 Big Dog Pitbulls by Vince at VS Customs at his shop in Huntington Connecticut.
The "whine" that belts produce has to do with the un-even and shallow "peaks & valleys" of shallow tooth depth aluminum pulleys on the engine crank pulley & clutch basket pulley.
Aluminum pulleys can warp and wear and dont exhibit or give constant contact path with the belt(all this from Baker direct & Vince)
The BAKER "Synchronous" Belt Unit has 14mm belt & pulley depth-and that means the leading edges of the pulleys arent the only surface contact that they get with the belt.
Along with the 14mm belt depth-ALL the peaks & valleys of BOTH Pulleys have constant contact with the Belt that only BAKER uses.FULL depth & pulley contact of the belt & pulleys results in less noise, better torque and power transfer & better performance as well as longer life.BAKERS Warranty is also great.
I swear...I didn't believe the difference it made in my bikes after Vince installed em both...but I'm a believer now.
This is all real world experience over the DSSC units I had in both my Pitbulls.
I'll never go back.....the BAKER Beltdrive is Awesome.
