PDM with HID???

I got my PDM installed successfully after having cut all of the large connectors off and hard wiring it in. Bike ran fine, all functions and lights, and indicators worked correctly. I took it out for a 10 mile loop to make sure I was good to go.

I get home feeling pretty good about it; decided I'd throw Jakes HID kit in the bike before loading it up for my trip. HID kit went in easy enough, buttoned it all up and turned it on. I let the HID burn in for a few minutes before testing the high beam - no issue. Indicator and all fine.

Turn the key off, then back on a few minutes later and I notice the HID strobing like it wouldn't fire. I tried the key on/off several times before it finally just quit trying to fire. High beam circuit still worked. So I think well maybe if I fire the bike up - as if my voltage may have been down (although I knew I was at full charge) Try to fire the bike up and it won't stay running - it would fire up for sec and cut off like I was hitting the stop button. Strange, bike was just out. Toggle to high beam and notice the indicator no linger works; however, the bike starts up and runs fine until I hit the low beam and the bike shuts off. I am like wtf? So I figure well, maybe the HID kit ballast is jacked up. I take the kit back out and put my old stock bulb back in. Same condition, low beam circuit is dead, high beam indicator no longer works. However, the bike now stays running while on low beam now - just no power to the low beam wire in the bucket.

Checked all fuses on PDM even though it doesn't look like the headlight circuit is fused. The headlight circuit runs through the HCI that I hardwired in.

So, what did the HID burn out; 1) Hand control switch - unlikley (no high beam indicator) 2) HCI ---???

Any others with experience running the HID with PDM kit? Any useful suggestions. BTW, yes my wire plus kit is looking attractive sitting on the shelf. I don't have time to re-wire this bike again before my trip though.

HID fry the HCI ??? Can you post the wiring diagram ? and what was your work around for the air ride system ?

Jim, touch base with Jake. I almost gave up on my HID because it would either 1) not start or 2) kill the bike while I was riding it. He installed what was the equivalent of a delay on the light and it's been fine ever since.

wow  I hope you get it figured out...I am running the 8000k HID that I got from Jake with my Wire-Plus and the HID works great!:2thumbs:
One thing I like about the Wire-Plus is the 2 position key switch...I can start the bike with the lights off and then click it the the next position and run with my lights on
Maybe someone else that has a PDM with the HID will chime in...

Thanks man, but it appears to have already fried my HCI module of the PDM kit perhaps. I'm not running the EHC currently.

Yes, it would appear to be the HCI currently. So I guess this would be the day that I regret hard-wiring that shit in there....:D

Anyway, yeah I can scan the wiring diagram sometime, but currently in the garage trying not to drink too much......

Glad I went with WP as a backup to my original EHC.:D So PDM doesn't have self cancelling turn signals and can't handle HID. I wonder what else comes up. Just keeping a list and checking it twice.:D

No Need to scan the diagram .... you have enough to do ...
for some reason destiny is trying to keep you from making this trip....

Oops, sorry about that. I really don't like to see people go through frustrating events like this. There is so much other stuff to worry about. Sorry again.

No prob Huw; its all good....my plan not to drink too much didn't work out either.....:D

So interestingly the wiring diagram doesn't really seem to provide the detail I need to be 100% sure. You see, there are several relays within the PDM fuse block that aren't represented in the schematic. Yet, there is only a 12 pin harness that comes from it - of those, I do not see an indication that the headlight runs through it. This seems odd to me, as I would have guessed lights would have been selected as a fused circuit.

It is clear that the light circuit goes through the HCI module; kinda of a no brainier there, given it is the hand control interface of course.

Btw, on the AirRide; I just put in a simple circuit (un-switched) fused +12v that I ran to a toggle mounted under and through the left side cover...you can't see the switch with the cover on unless you really look for it...Simple enough there. I could have went switched 12v, but un-switched was easier right off the circuit breaker.

I guess I am holding out hope that BDM can enlighten me as to what may have gone wrong here...I do know that the HID was strobing, and the bike would shut off/or not run while in low beam (normal) operation. In hindsight, I probably should have removed the HID on the first sign of trouble, but given I had no previous experience with a HID / ballast, I assumed it was a faulty ballast as I'd already proven the previous PDM install to be successful. I'm not sure, how a possible faulty ballast could have caused the condition that I now have however. I don't understand how it is that the bike would shut off on low beam if not for something burned/shorted within the HCI module.

Anyway, I've got the bike running with high beam mode (stock bulb) and that is how I will roll on this trip it looks like. I've decided to do a little more polishing and a little less wiring until I get back...:D

Don't know what may have happened although it's appearing to be your HCI or the Ballest in the HID. I do know I ran a HID from Jake for some time and my problems with starting the bike got worse. The high beam indicator also quit working and even after switching back to a H4 bulb the indicator never worked again.

Edit - The problems above happened with the EHC not the PDM.

Yeah, there's no question to me that the HID jacked my bike up; the question is really what specifically did it burn. I believe I know the answer (HCI); proving it will be somewhat more involved especially given that I had to cut all the connectors off it and hard wire it in to be able to fit my side covers back on the bike.

Through process of elimination, I've since identified what most the fuses protect/control; seems like good info to share since I don't see it any of the BDM doc's unless I am over looking it:

Big Dog PDM Detail / Symptoms

F1 - High Beam / Start switch/Starter Solenoid 25a
F2 - ??? 5a - No Change without it, everything seems to work (-lowbeam)
F3 - ??? 5a - No Change without it, everything seems to work (-lowbeam)
F4 - Dash indicators (Nuetral/Oil Pressure) 5a
F5 - Start Relay/Circuit 5a
F6 - Horn 5a
F7 - Running Lights
F8 - Speedometer
F9 - ??? (10a) No change without it; Everything seems to work when removed (-lowbeam); While removed, hitting horn button causes High Beam to switch to low or off.
F10 - Compression Releases (Front/Rear) (5a)

R1 - Iginition Switch Relay
R2 - Starter Relay
R3 - Compression Release Relay

Of the 3 unknowns, one should be the tach (it still works with all of those pulled though) one should be the tag light (yet, this was also taken out with the low beam circuit) and one may be the speed sensor.

This is why I haven't done the hid's . I would like to convert over because the stock headlight sucks but I'm wanting to go with the pdm kit but it's not looking good though.

If it ain't broke don't f**k with it. We have enough trouble with the electronics on these bikes. The stock headlight on my bike works fine and half of my riding is done at night. Been using a non-HID for many years because that's all there was. Just think installing one of these systems on a dog is just asking for trouble.

I bet if you look the wires over on the HID kit VERY VERY well, you will find somewhere that a wire was pinched in the bucket at time of install and shorted the HCI. 50% of the few HID kits I get back that "didn't work with the EHC" came back and when I inspect the harness I found tears and cuts in the insulation from the install whet it was pinched. Probably would have worked perfectly fine if it had been installed more carfully. The strobe (on/off) is the protection circuit in the ballast shutting it down and it coming back on, to only to see poor power or ground again, and shutting back off (repeatedly).

It sounds like the HCI is still running the Headlight voltage reading software through it to be able to auto switch the headlight from low beam to high and vise versa just like the EHC had. Of which was the reason of buying a PDM, to get away from that crap.

That is why I do not support the PDM kit because it still has too much electronics in it and failures will still arise do to that, just like the Horn honk/bike shut down issue.

I dont want to get into looking like I am talking smack about the PDM kit, but I looked into it when the local dealer got their first one in and I tore into it and I didn't like what I seen.

Anytime that there is software reading the voltage on the headlight circuit, this has chance to happen. But I am very sure it isn't a faulty Ballast, and you can test that by connecting it directly to your bike or car battery to test it.

More of a chance that a wire was pinched in the bucket and shorted the HCI.

Jake, while I don't have a microscope handy; I haven't detected a short through the insulation with a magnifying glass. I understand it's all about the $ for you, I respect that and can absorb loss - you win. Yet, blindly blaming your repeat customer for careless installation (correctly or incorrectly) - really?

I hope you enjoy that revenue.
