Has anyone custom made a sissy bar for a BDM chopper? ..say like a 03 chopper. I would like to make one, rather than buying one.....650.00

Thanks,Steve

working on one now with a local machine shop...using a set of stock struts, following the same radius, ensuring all the bolt, light, and wiring holes match up, but instead of the drastic taper from front end to back end, keep the thickness the same so you have more surface area to mount the bar...the extra thickness should make it more sturdy and able to handle the rotational force of a person leaning back against it...planning on using a bar from Ginz if they'll ever call me back to discuss details...i've been on hold as of late because I had to divert $$$ towards a WiresPlus purchase/install...should be able to get back on track later this month.

Love to see it! Hope it works out..
if i can get it right and make it look halfway decent, there might be enough demand for a small "production run" that would help drive down the cost...that $800+ from BDM is B.S.

me too, I have an 04 chopper, same strut as the 03 I think? I already have a ginz bar and the custom mounts but really could use those wide struts !!!!

Finally got in with a reputable machine shop; we went over the spec's and there are a lot of fixed/direct costs involved with fab'n a set of struts. :bang:

They are building a 3D mock-up for proper fitting to the bike, writing the CNC program takes about 5 hrs, and milling the part takes about 3 hrs. The material to be used is aircraft grade aluminium and should be as strong or stronger than the BDM factory version.

For this first set of struts, my cost has been estimated at $1,000.00.

I confirmed that a small production run would drive the cost down and will confirm discounted pricing for runs of 5, 10, 15, & 20 sets soon.

Send me a PM if you're still interested....:(

Oh Shit!!! :zzsorry: :toily: Is this with sissy bar, bag, tank of gas,oil change...LOL

Wow...know I was thinking somthing besides new struts... were the tail lights are there can be an attachment that blots on to allow a sissy bar....
Lets us 03 chopper dudes know of how many it will take for a "discount" and we can try to do a mass order or somthing!!

Keep me posted as to design and looks. I would be interested if the money is right and the design works. Will this bar be decorative or will it support a bag or a body loaded down?

I don't think the hole for the light would be strong enough to hold a bar with a bag hanging on or body leaning against it. That's why I went the route of fab'n a set of struts that are safe.

The tail lights would be pushed back about 3" for better visibility...i think I've seen a picture of some on this forum that show what I'm talking about...i'll look for it and update this post.

The attached shows the design I'm pursuing; notice the width & thickness compared to our stock struts. This is where the additional material adds to the strength;

NOT SURE WHO'S BIKE THIS IS AND I HOPE YOU DON"T GET PISSED AT ME FOR USING IT?!?!?!

I'm just talkin' struts here; the bar i'll get from Ginz with just the ctr-to-ctr measurement of the bar holes across the fender; i'm told by the machine shop that the design will be sturdy enough to hold a person or bag; just have to work out the quantity discount to get the price down.

Follow-up - not getting anywhere with this effort. :bang: On a whim, Called BDM Performance today and they have the right side strut but not the left...ordered the right side (~$330) only and gonna go back to the machine shop and see if they can "mirror" one for the left side...should arrive here Thursday and you can bet your a$$ I'll be at the machine shop on Friday!!!

If they can do it and do it well, I'll see what I can do to get them to make more of them, or make sets of them...more to follow....KG out...
