Another EHC Problem? Need Help

Energy One

Hey guys just joined yesterday and hoping to get some advice before I take my 2009 Mastiff in for repair (don't want to be clueless). This past weekend, i rode in Galveston - awesome place where bikers are welcomed everywhere. Anyway, I had a problem with the bike as follows. Stopped for gas. When I tried to start the bike, the speedometer lit up and lights came on, but bike would not crank. I turned the ignition off but the speedometer and lights stayed on even after removing the key from the ignition....very weird. I tried to switch on and off several times but the electrical system appeared to be locked. I disconnected the positive cable to the battery and reconnected back on and the electrical system reset. I was able to start the bike and everything seemed normal except for the headlights that kept switching to high beam on its own. I switched back to low beam only to have the bike switch back to high after a few seconds. The same thing (electrical system lock and switching to high beam) occurred several times during the weekend....not everytime, but did occur 3-4 times. Any ideas? Could it be the EHC gone bad?

Appreciate any help or advice you may have

I would start with the headlight. Take it apart and see if plug to the headlight did not melt on you (which they are known to do that). If it has replace it with a ceramic one. Check the bulb and make sure both high and low beam elements are good. Also check the wire coming out the bottom of the headlight bucket, make sure the insulation is still on the wires and not rub Thru causing a short. :2thumbs:

Thanks I'll try that. One thing to note is that about a month ago I had the dealer change out theow beam bulb with an HID kit. Works great but may now wondering if the installation was done right.

I'm not sure why that would keep your bike from cranking. One basic thing that should be done on all bikes is to remove the EHC plugs, fill them with dielectric grease and secure the fittings back in place. This should also be done to all other connectors. Water does the strangest thing to these dogs. Had you driven through a rain or washed your bike recently? It makes my dash lights go crazy until they dry out completely. Water in the EHC is subject to do anything to your bike electrically, with or without the key

Could be the HID has a different LOW bean current draw which is now screwing with the EHC current sensing.

Copied from Jrods other thread in the Help Wanted forum.

The EHC is designed to switch back to HI beam when the current load on the LO beam is sensed too low (burnt out low beam)....meaning the LO beam is bad. It could be a bad bulb or a melted bulb socket which is not uncommon.

As for the EHC acting up and won't turn off, it could be a low battery voltage. The battery must be at 12.8v or higher in order for the EHC to function properly. Disconnect the + battery terminal, disconnect the EHC harness connectors and clean the old dielectric grease in the harness connectors and refill them then reassemble to the EHC module. Sometimes the key switch contacts can go bad and cause intermittent operation. This may be caused by hanging too much heavy junk on the key ring.

Try these and let us know.

That is why I said start witht the Headlight. I would remove the HID use the H-4 bulb it came with and see what happens. Like he said check your ground wire in the headlight. The EHC worked fine after you reset it, except for the headlight. That is why I said start with the headlight. We can beat a horse to death with different ideas, however, the bottom line is that the headlight is the one thing that started giving you problems. Remove the HID, I think that is you problem. Others have done the same, could just be a bad blub check with Jake on that.

Start with the headlight. Simple things first.

My 09' Mastiff doesn't like the HID headlight either. Sometimes it doesn't want to start speedo flashes etc. Never had everything stay on with the key off however. Probably need to go back with the H-4 bulb until you remove the EHC for good.
