Rubbing compound or the use of a claybar will work just fine, however there does seem to be a bit of skill and knowledge neccessary to work the buffer properly, definately nothing that can be taught from reading some directions....

Use a buffer and Mequires swirl remover. You don't really need the buffer but it makes the job easier. I would say no to the rubbing compound, it is way too course for what you are trying to do. Even polishing compound is probably too much. Try the Meguiers it works great for swirl marks and minor imperfections. If you find that you need something a little more heavy duty use their X2 scratch remover followed by the swirl remover.

Try the least aggressive first.
Clay bar. If that doesn't work try some polish.
Next would be compound.
Last would be sand and buff.

I used lacquer thinner after testing to see if it was safe. Worked great without abrasives. The previous owner got some kind over spray all over it.

Glad you got it taken care of, but I think you were on some very thin ice using Lacquer thinner, any scratch or stone chip could've been a disaster.
