Compression Release

So, the wife and i were riding up to Leesburg this past weekend. I got to the Leesburg exit and my engine sounded horrendous, sounded like a rod was knocking. I whipped it off the street and shut it down, looked over the bike and found that the front cylinder compression release valve was sticking out of the top of the engine! So the "knock" was actually the small (but loud and embarrasing) Pop of compression escaping.

Anyone have this happen to them? Haven't looked at how to repair yet, so i thought i'd share this and get input.

Hope everyone that made it to Leesburg had a great trip... and hope the rest of you had a great ride over the weekend too!

So what did you do? Push it back in and keep ridin or was it toast?
I rode on into Leesburg, spent the rest of the day with the wife looking and listening to bands, then rode home... i'll be taking it into the shop today.

Yeah, the shop said there was a special tool for it. I'm going to watch them swap it out and see if there is anything special about it... I like to do any wrenching that isn't under warranty (I have an extended "aftermarket" warranty).

That's a wonderful write up... and yep, that was about exactly what happened to me, except my front cylinder CR went out! Thanks for the write up... looking at the pics gave me much better insight.

Apparently my "fender to fender" extended warranty does not cover compression relief valves. Go figure. :bang:

Anyone have detailed instructions on the installation of the damn things?

Check the S&S website tech area. As I remember, they have a detailed pdf info sheet.

i found the bolt to block off the release hole... but no CR valve.

Does anyone have a part number / resource / price / instructions, anything for the compression release? Jus

I chased down the LINK. What you want to look at from the S&S Cycle website is PDF form 51-1115 - it is towards the bottom of that linked page. It is a free download (4 page pdf file) that one should print out and add to your service manual.

Thanks... that pdf will come in handy. Damn compression relief valves are almost $130 a piece!!! Thought i was going to buy some things for the bike... didn't realize I'd be buying things to keep it running, not to fix it up. Bummer!

just pull the bootoff and use some good penetrating oil on it,there is a slot in the top and you can rotate it with a small flat tip screwdriver to help loosen it up.my front one was stuck pretty good but after shooting some rust penetrant on it after i got to work and working it like i described it is free as a whistle now
