Wow, I've never seen that happen to one of ours. Glad that you didn'tget hurt and glad that what's left held up... Great to see BDM covering it for you!

glad you're ok - a nasty face plant could have been in your very near future there. Good spot from smithy - it doesn't look like it failed on the joint does it

I would like to hear from some experienced welders as it seems odd for this to oxydize from the inside like that.

Saw Oscar's post about his bars and thought about this one which I probably should have updated earlier to show the end result.....Big Dog sent a new set of bars which were bent pipe rather than welded....pics below....

I never did like the idea of the weld on my 07 bars. My original bars got damaged, so I swapped to 08 bars with the bend instead of the weld.

If welded properly bars should not break. Problem is when welding and grinding the weld smooth, some guys don't make a wide enough bead with enough penetration. The result is what you see here. Unfortunately with a finished products like the bars,it's very hard to check for any possible failure. Two things to look for are: The obvious is to look very close for cracking, also check for rust bleeding from the weld joint.

FYI: I have over twenty years welding experience.

Wow...I hope he faired better than the bike?
It knocks the wind out of me just thinking back. Yes, he was blessed. Lots of road rash but the worse was a badly broken wrist. He did go over the bars and travel down the highway on his face for a while.

I'm glad to hear he made it through that, Kathy - clearly could have been a much different outcome for both of you.
