Why it happened, what it means to you...

It should be no surprise what just happened to BDM. Assuming you can figure out the economics of mass production/manufacturing in the U.S. in a recession, especially given these bikes are pure luxury items at $30k, it's not brain surgery.

The more important question should be, "what does this mean to me?"

If you own a BDM, two things can happen. #1 - Your bike's value will soon drop like an anchor, and be thankful you're not a dealer with any kind of inventory sitting in your showroom. The depreciation curve just got steep.
-OR-
#2, the BDM following is so loyal (I'm not talking about love here, I'm talking about owners who do not sell their bikes no matter what) that the inherent valuation of the bikes are somewhat preserved (forget the notion if appreciation) and should you ever have to sell your bike, you wont take such a bath.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. It is also dependent on availability of parts, competent service by indy's, etc. The dealer network is...how shall we say...fucked! Warranty you ask? good luck with that one. There is no entity to back a manufacturers warranty. Your warranty now is your wallet.

Retail value of the new bikes has just dropped significantly. This will inevitably have a trickle down effect on all used BDM's for sale as well. Dont blame me, its economics, pure and simple.

In the end, if you are fortunate enough to be in this exclusive group of BDM ownership...count yourself lucky. You now own something that is no longer made. They dont make these anymore. They will become rarer and rarer over the long term. If anyone, like me, is set on buying one of these, well, there are only so many out there now.

If you're a buyer, prices will drop in the short and mid term. If youre a seller, hang on for a while, let the dust settle, dont get desparate, you bike's valuation will level off then stabilize for a good long time.

These bikes arent for everyone, but anyone that wants one, will pay for em.

Like me.

Besides, nothing says BDM wont come back smarter and leaner in the future!

I agree 100% and for us that own the 2009 and 2010 wolf even better because there are not many out there. I wonder how many Wolfs have been built.

If I had the money, I would still buy one. But then again, I have no problem working on them myself :D
As far as parts go. Worst case, you can get rid of the electronics that use that EHC and the PCB handle bar switches. Convert it to H-D style. Also for any motor parts you can get anything from an S&S dealer. Transmission and Primary from any Baker dealer. everything else such as misc seals, bearings, lights you can get out of most any parts catalog such as Drag Specialties.
If anyone needs a transmission rebuilt I still have some bearings, seals, ect and the Baker tools needed to do the job.

If your starter fails and needs rebuilt, there is a new company that will be up and running very soon that will get your starter up and running again very quickly.:2thumbs:

There is so much talent on this site that the demise of BDM should not be an issue.

Guys n gals...what happened to BDM has absolutely no bearing on my purchase decision.

When I get up all the cash, I will buy my Ridgeback. Why? Because when I sit on one, I get a hard on!

IMO, it is the dadgum most beautiful chopper I have ever seen.

You guys are soooo fucking lucky to own one.

And for the record, I do expect BDM to come back in the future, smarter, leaner.

I'm in this for the long haul.

Well I am one of the newest members to Big Dog Community and I don't ever plan on selling it unless I get a lot more for it than I paid. When you sit on and fire up that bad ass 117 S&S you feel like your on the Baddest Mother F*cker out there on the road. :choppersmiley:All other bikers can sit back and drool and wish they had one.:moped:

I agree with WhoDey and KnotSo. The guys riding on Harleys that throw off about our Choppers being too expensive and "out of date" are jealous. It is funny how a friend will act when thay feel defensive. Attacking someone else's scooter to bolster one's own stature, not cool. IMHO

I bought my 2011 Pitbull Serial #0001 in October 2010 directly from BDM in Wichita since I live here. They were very willing to deal with me and it was before my knowledge of bankruptcy. I plan on owning my BD as long as I can ride but I'm kind of reluctant to ride it as I don't know what the collector value may be in time if BDM doesn't make a comeback and start selling bikes again. JR07, I have asked my local BDM salesman how many 2011 Pitbulls were made but never got a response. I may never know as they are selling 2011 Pitbull rolling chassis kits on their website.
