It should be no surprise what just happened to BDM. Assuming you can figure out the economics of mass production/manufacturing in the U.S. in a recession, especially given these bikes are pure luxury items at $30k, it's not brain surgery.
The more important question should be, "what does this mean to me?"
If you own a BDM, two things can happen. #1 - Your bike's value will soon drop like an anchor, and be thankful you're not a dealer with any kind of inventory sitting in your showroom. The depreciation curve just got steep.
-OR-
#2, the BDM following is so loyal (I'm not talking about love here, I'm talking about owners who do not sell their bikes no matter what) that the inherent valuation of the bikes are somewhat preserved (forget the notion if appreciation) and should you ever have to sell your bike, you wont take such a bath.
The truth is somewhere in the middle. It is also dependent on availability of parts, competent service by indy's, etc. The dealer network is...how shall we say...fucked! Warranty you ask? good luck with that one. There is no entity to back a manufacturers warranty. Your warranty now is your wallet.
Retail value of the new bikes has just dropped significantly. This will inevitably have a trickle down effect on all used BDM's for sale as well. Dont blame me, its economics, pure and simple.
In the end, if you are fortunate enough to be in this exclusive group of BDM ownership...count yourself lucky. You now own something that is no longer made. They dont make these anymore. They will become rarer and rarer over the long term. If anyone, like me, is set on buying one of these, well, there are only so many out there now.
If you're a buyer, prices will drop in the short and mid term. If youre a seller, hang on for a while, let the dust settle, dont get desparate, you bike's valuation will level off then stabilize for a good long time.
These bikes arent for everyone, but anyone that wants one, will pay for em.
Like me.
Besides, nothing says BDM wont come back smarter and leaner in the future!
