Check Oil Level - Confused (not hard to do haha)

Ok, got a 06 Mastiff, looking at the owners manual, it has a drawing of the oil tank filler. First, is there a dipstick on this year of Mastiff, I can't see it, and the manual doesn't show it? So when I peak in with a flash light, I see oil way at the bottom of the tube (about 5" down from the top), as far down as I can see. My question is this, is that the "bottom of the filler neck"? i.e., my oil level is good?

Here are a pics of what I see, and a pic from the manual.

Thanks so much, sorry for my ignorance.

First of all, change that dirty ass oil.
The oil dipstick is attached to the cap that you unscrewed to look in the tank. If for some reason someone installed a no-OEM cap then your oil level should be about 1/2 to 1" up from the bottom of the filler neck.

That is the plan my friend.

But, my question is still is where that oil at, the "bottom of the filler neck"? Because if you look at the manual picture, it's a little confusing.

Thanks.

Yeh, that dirty oil at the bottom that's in your pic is the bottom of the filler neck. Is this what your asking?

My 04 Chopper doesn't have a dip stick thing either. Just a cap that I pull off and look into the oil tank. The directions that are provided are quite confusing to say the least. I played it safe and changed the oil, put in the recommended amount and then took note of where the level was at. This seemed to be the best thing to do. For me anyway.

UP! :flag:
Bike should be on side stand, not upright on a level surface. Some years did not come with a cap and dipstick combo. If the bike is completely drained of oil, Tank, oil filter and crank case, it should hold all 3 quarts of motor oil.
Take a flashlight, and look down into the tube with the bike on the side stand. Make sure the bike is not running but has been warmed up to operating temp. The oil should be at the base of the tube. In the picture you posted it looks like it is a little low and the oil you are seeing is just residual, not the actual oil level. Move the bike a little while its on the side stand and see if the oil moves back and forth at the base. If so, then you know that's the actual oil and is to the level you want it to be at.

Now everything's clear as mud. I've always checked mine with the stand up, if I saw oil it was good enough for me. Not sure if it was up to the bottom of the neck or not.

Andrew,

When you check the oil level after the bike is warmed up how long should you wait. The oil level on mine will rise the longer i wait?

Just a minute or so. It should not take long to be at the settled level.
In case you missed my last post, I misspoke about the oil levels...oops, sorry. Sidestand on all models but Ridgeback.

On my bike (2002 prosport), it says to check with bike upright, but it actually doesn't matter. If your tank is symmetrical, and the dipstick is in the center, the level won't change on the dipstick if you are upright or on the sidestand. Draw it on paper, or check it on the bike if you don't believe it! Now if your tank is not symmetrical, or if the dipstick is off to one side or another, it definitely makes a difference.

Question on oil level on '04 Chopper. A friend of mine has this bike and his oil fill is centered in the tank. It has a push in type plug which blows off occasionally and doing the search I found to check the crankcase vent hose. Will do that for sure. Question is how far down in the tank should the oil level be? His is down about 3 inches...

He doesn't have a manual so he has just been wild ass guessing.
