03 chopper brake light problem

Hi guys,
I need help from the experts of the bigdog since im a newbie.. :D

its 03 chopper, i just bought it several weeks ago, well the problem im having now is with the brake light.
the cables for rear brake light (underthe fender) were making short so the relay died and the rear lights wouldnt work.
so i installed new wires (under the fender) and new relay and now the light will just stay on and blinker would not work and brake light will not work either.

i did search the forum but i cant really find the right answer so if anyone had similar problem or know solution to this problem, can you help me please?

fyi i have order the wires from bigdog specailist dealer and im sure i have connect the wires right. also it was working fine before it went out, so i dont really understand what the problem is. can anyone help me please,

i been fixing this bike since the day i brought it home.. till now and its just driving me crazy. :bang:

thanks for your time

John

To me it sounds like something is not wired correctly. I would double check all the stuff you just replaced. It is tough give pointers on wiring over the internet. If you are good with a multimeter you can check for a lot of problems. Is your switch on either the handlebar or the foot brake stuck closed maybe?

if you changed the entire section of wire from connector to connector, sometimes the pins get pushed out of the back of the connector instead of into the socket causing a "break" in continuity. check this and make sure all pins are seated properly. don't forget to use dielectric grease.

ah i see ok i will double check soon as i can :)

one more question, do you guys think the problem is EHC module? if everything above is good, i would change if i have to but the fact that WP isnt cheap so its making me to think if it is necessary or not. lol

thing to remember is that if you have a problem that is not EHC related before you do the wireplus, you will still have it after.

I doubt it's your EHC. You have an 03 which is the old Thunderheart and not BD. Like the guys said check your wires and switches. Something is probably crossed or not connected.

Got a few questions for ya John...
1. What relay are you talking about?
2. How are you with a meter?
3. Do you have a wiring diagram?

Hey John: If you would like, I can copy the wiring diagram from my service manual (yes, it does cover your BDM) and send it to you. No charge. I will need your mailing address, or course.

That relay is for the headlight so it's not likely your problem.
2) i dont really know what you mean by the meter...
Multimeter, to check voltage, continuity, etc.? You can't troubleshoot an electrical problem without one!

Let me know if you still need one in the morning and I'll email it to you.

So the lights turn on but you have no brake lights or turn signals? If that's the case power for those come from the EHC. You need to find out if you have power at P-4 (the large connector on the EHC) pins 4 and 7 when you hit the brakes or turn on the turn signal. If you don't you very well may have a bad EHC.

I'll take another look to see what else can be checked before you have to start looking for a controller... :(

hi guys,

I just findout what was wrong with a lights!!
your are not gonna believe this..

i disasembled the brake lever to check the switch for the 100th time, switch was working like everysingle time i checked (i poked it with a finger to check) and next thing i know is the brake Lever (Handle?) thing was not touching the brake switch..

it was THE most easy problem and i was looking everywhere else.. :loony:

well.. thank you so much dennis and everyone who actually spent their time to help me out.:up:

I wish I had more money.
So was the brake pedal making the lights work and not the hand lever? And why were the blinkers not working? I missed something somewhere.

I have a 03 chopper and my brake lights just quit working. I have a meter and can read the diagram which I have and have traced the power signal to the ECH and it is good. I have turn signals but the disconnect seems to be in the ECH. This is my second one they are shit and I have talked to Thunder heart many times they did not make the 03 ECH even though it looks like theirs. I have turn signals but no brake and when I jump the wire to the brakes a turn signal activation caused both to go like emergency flashers does any one a work around?
