Well I have been hearing a clinking noise front cyl for the past 100 miles....thought it was my compensator sprocket assy...changed out the whole primary drive with a spare I have.....didnt fix It....Stator/Alternator good....
Thought WTF pull the top end check rockers all good...pull heads...all good....cylinders pistons show normal wear... I'm thinking cant be Rod Bearings it was just a mild "Clinking noise" and not a "Knock" hell I only have 28K miles on the motor.....change the oil every 2000 miles

Well I put my hands on the Rod check for up and down play...Crap !!! there is about .100" play ????

WHAT CAN CAUSE ROD BEARING FAILURE ??? AT 28K ???

phatchopper300

I just wanta ride
I only have 10,000 miles and I can't answer that question? I hate to hear that. I am sure that someone will have an answer. Whats that going to cost to fix?:angry:

Dont know the cost yet....still need to pull the lower end out of my scoot this weekend and split the cases.....but I plan to do all the work myself....so it will just be the cost of parts...

Just had a shop drop off a 113" lower end today with rod problems, for a rebuild.
Frequently it's hard to say what the cause is,especially when it's together.
Could be bad metalurgy/hardness.Dirt in the oil.Poor air filtration from bogus a/cleaners,or lack of,engine sitting for very long periods of time without being run,oil pressure/low oil problems.etc.
Let us know what you find.

John thanks for the valued input....pulled the rear cylinder and checked it out and it feels like .030" side to side play and maybe .005" up and down play...that's only an estimate I haven't indicated it....I kind of suspect it's a metalurgy / hardness issue with the rod bearing itself...as there such a varation in wear between front and rear cylinder....in regards to oil / lubrication....I have this image in my mind that the flywheels are partially immersed in a sump of oil slinging lubricant everywhere so i'm not sure it's a lubrication issue or lack of.....What's puzzling is how it failed so quickly.....I ride my scoot daily and missing it already....Thanks for all who replied I will keep you updated with my findings

The rods are oiled through the pinion shaft to the crank pin/rod journal.
S&S does run a lot of side clearence on their rods.

Mobsta.....I read an earlier post where you stated S&S did your rebuild for $2500 thats a great deal.....local machine shops down here want $3K-5K...they must be smokiing crack...The rebuild is doable and will be a good little project.....Need to keep the cost down anyways wife has been out of work for awhile and she's going to get pissed if I start throwing alot of $$$ into this project.....:2thumbs:

S&S just told me 3K and at least 2 months

I'm going with a shop rebuild.
Thats not a bad price....If I dont have to work this weekend I will be able to get my flywheels on the bench and get some measurements....and if the crank pin is still good and in tolerance and I go with just replacing the rod bearings I should be able to keep the cost under $150...

what shop tcal? do they have a dyno? and are they familiar with bd?? i'm looking for a good dyno shop.
The shop is GMR performance in Prescott AZ. They are very familiar with S&S.

They do have a dyno but are not set up for 9' chopper pulls yet.

Try Eastside performance in Mesa

My rear cylinder was much worse than my front too. Aren't you going to have to have your cylinders bored?
