V&H BR 2-1 some observations coming from BR 2-2

I have had my 09 Mastiff nearly 2 years (2 years in Oct 13 2010) and of that I have put 17,000 miles of its 18,500 miles on it with the V&H BR 2-2 with the monster baffles (or thunder monster baffles, I forget the exact name).

That was my intro for this thread. I switched to the 2-1 big radius because I am tired of the way they look, plus everywhere I have gone, I see the V&H BR 2-2 pipes. I have always been very pleased with my performance and the mileage has typically been in the lower 40's.

Last week, I bought a new set of 2-1 BR off eBay, great deal, at $394.95 and free shipping. Since I mentioned I bought the 2-1's in the for-sale area, I have been peppered with how much and where did I get them (and pictures wanted of course). Well, to help you guys out, there are 3 more sets available at
BIG DOG K9 - BIG DOG MASTIFF VANCE & HINES EXHAUST : eBay Motors (item 150467776029 end time Oct-12-10 20:04:45 PDT)
This came as far as I can tell directly from Vance and Hines. Perfect, brand new with O2 sensor pipes. If you want these pipes, go for it.

Okay, that brings me up to the point I want to bitch about the pipes. First thing I hadn't realized was that I was going to have to buy blockoff for the sensors. I realized this Friday afternoon after I had the 2-2 pipes off. I went down to Iron Lightning and elevated my ass so they could do me again and I walked out with the V&H O2 sensor blockoffs. (At this point start adding up the additional costs). I think my bill with a set of un-needed exhaust gaskets was about $50.

Ok, got the pipes on and they look great. I figure I am done (1) and will be happy with the quiet sound (2) and additional power (3). Well, wrong on all 3 things. As I was admiring the huge collector on the 2-1, I noticed that the right passenger peg was really close to the pipe. Yep, it will not go down all the way and my old lady was wanting to go to a Bandido party with me Friday night. I pulled the peg and told her the good news that her knee would not hurt as usual since she would have to hold her right leg out past the pipe (at least I thought that was funny, she didn't).

Test ride was next, so I took it out and ripped around for 5 miles. Wow, sure is quiet, basically like the stock pipes as well as I can remember. I come in and find the thread questions about 2-1 pipes. EVERYBODY was saying that you would see a big diff in power and a great sound. Fellows, coming from modified BR 2-2's that is just bullshit. I immediately felt the loss of power, especially torque. The BR 2-2's with the monster baffles have a great ear-splitting sound of great power. The stock 2-1's just are way quiet.

Next thing I bought was the V&H BR 2-1 competition baffle (add another $50). Those will be in hopefully next week (Denis Kirk had the best price). I am hopeful that they will restore the lost power (and sound) I love so much.

Next, well, my plea for the peg offsets went for basically 3 days on this board with no peg offsets showing up. But again, nice comments on how I will like the 2-1's and how great they are. Oh yes and numerous requests for pictures (as I expect this thread will do). Untill I get the pegs on it, and feel like I am done, no pictures... I found the peg offsets today on eBay, add in another $115. Here is where you get them: Big Dog Motorcycle Clevis Adapter Kit : eBay Motors (item 140374756684 end time Oct-12-10 15:07:17 PDT)

In summary, my bargain set of 2-1 pipes DO look great. I am hopeful that the competition baffle will restore the lost power and sound. Of course the peg offsets (clevis) will fix the wife problem.

Those of you who will reply with a comment of "why didn't you modify the stock 2-1 baffle", the answer is simple, there have just been noise regulations passed that are going to eventually stop all the loud pipes. At least when that happens, I can put the quiet baffle back in for the noise inspection, or to get a ticket dismissed. You know the old saying "Loud pipes save lives", well, it 's going to be more like "loud pipes cost rights". Sad, but might be too late to stop this. I encourage each of you guys to join the MRF or your local ABATE chapter. It's the only voice bikers have and they need help.

Once I get the baffles in and pegs fixed, I will update this thread.

I didn't want to "muddy" up the above so I will suggest to everyone that you make sure your exhaust pipe flanges are tight. My front on was leaking.

And I will be posting my V&H BR 2-2 pipes for sale. Not a scratch on the heat shields at all and the mount bracket has been chromed. Will come with stock baffles included as well as the aftermarket monster baffles.

Pictures will be in the 4 sale area when I post them probably late tomorrow.

$450 plus shipping (my guess is shipping will be about 50)

I too have the 2 into 1 and love mine also. I knocked part of my plug out and it's not too loud. I can say without a doubt that the 2 into 2s I had on before were louder with the baffles in. I like the deep throaty sound of it now. :2thumbs:

Richard, I thought it was best to start a new thread on the noise law issue.

Why don't you give the Tulsa chapter ABATE a shot? I think you will like everyone and enjoy it. Meetings are always last thursday of the month at the Shriners temple at 28th and Sheridan in Tulsa. Even if you don't want to be active, the yearly dues help out in a big way. ABATE has had a great year and got 4 bills passed and turned into laws that are all pro-biker.

ABATE of Tulsa for everyone on here that can help.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Mine was the opposite. I replace a set of Bassani Pro Streets with these 2-1 on my 03 Chop. A rear passenger off-set was included and there were no sensor issues. Power band comes on as a surprise because I no longer get the rap of the throttle feed-back when I crank on it. If you want loud take the baffles early on, because they will be difficult later if you try to remove them. Good Luck

I ended up ordering the V&H competition baffle (which had to be modified to fit into the non competition BR 2-1's). This baffle has an inside diameter 1/2" greater than the stock baffle, plus, the glasspack area is only 1 inch wide. It's unfortunate, but I blitzed out and forgot to take a picture of the competition baffle after modification. What I did will have less back pressure than taking the plug off the end of the stock one. My mod required using a lathe and welder, so it was not a "bolt it in" type mod.

This returned the bike to at least the HP and torque I had with the BR 2-2 with the BCT monster baffles. It sounds a little different. Just as loud, but a deeper sound.

Also, the 2000 rpm vibration was reduced (as I suspected it would be). Obviously, the engine doesn't like a lot of backpressure.

As soon as the offset clevis' come in, I will post some pictures.

How about posting some sound clips "before and after" so we can hear the difference. Of course you'll have to put the 2into2's back on.:D:lol::D
