Big help wanted going nuts

Hey guys, I really did not wanted to write this post sorry for the wall of text but here it goes

My 07 K9 wont start, it has 5000 miles on it and had been running trouble free always has a battery tender connected when not in use

I am in costa rica so no dealers here :(

Here is what has been happening.
I used the bike last week it ran fine and start up fine.

This Saturday I came to use the bike, I did the usual thing I do, turn on ignition, press START and then HI bean to pump up the air suspension, once its high enough I press RUN and then start to actually start the engine.

Well this time I pressed RUN and then start and the bike wouldn't start, the started wouldn't turn, there would be some sort of click sound and all lights go off then back on.

This had happen before when I first purchased the bike in Florida, and it was the Battery low on charge, so I Thought well its weird the tender its always connected but w/e

I used a load tester and checked the battery well it drooped to about half the load.

I disconnected the battery and connect it to a charger, meanwhile I took the battery of my Softail tested with the load charger it was fine.

Took it out of the softail and place it on the Dog, i made sure the softail would start before taking out the battery it did just fine.

So with the softail battery on the DOG it did the exact same thing... just a click and nothing.

So I started checking things, the breaker was fine,

I then discovered that the battery would loose all voltage when trying to start turns out the Ground terminal was loose /sigh So I got a new battery put it on the Dog and now the situation changed a little.

When I press RUN and then START the bike tries to Crank but then dies...

I tested the new battery with the load tester it came back worst than the original dog battery :bang:

So I went and got it replace this time the new battery tested fine with the load test..

I placed the new battery on the softail and connected the load test, while doing a start on the engine the load dropped a little but still remain on normal levels

So I place the new battery on the Dog and while it still would not start but it did something different.

Now when I press RUN then START the bike cranks for a second then dies and the hazard lights come on WTF!!!

I connected the load test while doing a start and on the DOG the load drops significantly more than on than on the harley almost all the way down.

So I did the following to test the Starter, I first removed the spark plugs then took a wire from a positive lead, removed the positive connector on the starter and connected the wire, the starter spins just fine, so does the engine, So this leads me to believe that the starter and solenoid are fine however the load still goes all the way down initially and then maintains at normal level.

I checked ground cables they all appear fine.

My mechanic friend think its the starter but i'm still hesitant about that.

So for some reason I forgot about the EHC lights until today and now I'm really confused.

Are the lights suppose to be coming on when everything is ok? or only when theres a problem.

Right now the lights are doing the following:
When I turn on the ignition the "Controller" green light comes on and starts blinking
Also the yellow light next to it "power" comes on and stays on

When I press the RUN button the Ignition LED comes on and stays on, If I press start the starter cranks for about a second all lights on the EHC come on and then off on that same second.

The AIR ride led also comes on if I pump air into the system or out.

so are the LED suppose to be on or is this indicating a fault?

Note that the turn signal LEDS high/low beam do not come on when I use those functions.

This leads me to believe the problem is in the module? could it be fried? or a short somewhere? Ive tested cables and check connectors they all look good or could it still be the starter solenoid?

sounds like your doing a good job trouble shooting....have you checked the conpression releases?? are thay working? the haz. flashing shows poor battery conditions.. if the comp. releases arnt working the battery will drop voltage will drop fast. also check the starter solenoid contacts,, under a load it may not spin the engine like it should & drain the battery.. check & clean the starter solenoid contacts..

Soundsto me like the compression releases are hanging if you pull the plugs and it rotates fine sounds like there stickin push them in manually and try startin it.. the hazard lights are telling you voltage is low so if it haint stuck compression releases you may just have a starter draggin cause current is disapating mighty fast and if you haint got no smoke the only thing that will drain a battery that quick is a starter

damm we posted at the same time Eric

I love this place and the people in it,

so trigger happy me took out the starter, both rollings? not sure about the name in English need to be replace as when they roll they make significant noise and one gets a little stuck so thats one thing but probably not the one causing the issue, the carbons look a little wear but in overall good shape, I'm taking it to my electro mechanic friend in the morning to have it check out, will also check the solenoids at that point.

the comp releases hmm i haven't check that will double check it once the starter is back in place.

thanks so far will keep updating on the progress

Need to make sure that battery has enough cranking amps also. You can always get a new battery but if the CCA is too low your asking for the same thing to happen. You need one of those special batteries like Eric has, it'll make that starter rotate and sound like a little S&S motor...Just saying, good luck...:2thumbs:

That battery should have no less than 12.8v after it's off the charger at least an hour. If it has less then the battery may be going bad.

well I found the problem and I'm kicking myself for it as well.

Short story its the battery /sigh

The solenoid contacts where in excellent shape, I replaced the rollings?? and put it back together

Up until tonight I had been "jumping" it using a booster or another bike battery or just the new battery that's now in the softail to no avail, well a friend needed to borrow the booster this afternoon so we went over and try to start the car to discover it wasn't working FUCK!

So I came home took the battery out of the Jeep and jumped the bike with booster cables well the bike fired up just fine FUCK! again

So apparently the "best" battery as the local Harley dealer told me is not enough for the Dog, and it doesn't have a CCA rating, so that one its staying on the softail and I'm ordering me a Braille one

use caution when jumpin off your bike with eather the booster box or another battery.. it can kill your ehc...... the HD battery should do the job.. I just went with the braile due to higher cranking amps..no matter what battery you go with it needs to be charged well.. or it will cause problems...

well the harley dealer here doesnt sell "harley" branded batterys which may be the problem the ones he sells are yuasa the YTX20HL-BS which in the past had work great for me on HDs and its supposedly rated at 310CCA

Sorry for the late update, but my Grandma passed away Thursday morning so I was not able to work on the dog until today.

I got my hands on a DEKA battery rated at 275CCA, this is working great so far, but I'm still ordering the Braille just to be safer, thanks for all the help

Sorry for your loss, just my:zz2cents:eek:n the 275cca battery,I think your dog is going to chew on that like an old sneaker.I'm no expert but your probably better off with a 310cca(fully charged) at least.

Had similar problems with the lights and all, turns out my braille was bad, they sent another one and all is fine. The other thing that I found out was that my charger wasn't charging, as it was due to the inline fuse being burned out AND the pig tail was not making contact anymore so check your voltage via the pig tail to ensure it still works.
