NGK Iridium problem

I'm running these new Iridium plugs from NGK
Anyone else had this issue with the insulator breaking in a U shape.
Not breaking from putting in or taking out but actually cracking while the motor is running. This is the 2nd one in two weeks.

By the way, put your camera on "micro" when doing the closeups and you'll get nice pics!!

NGK DCPR7EIX Iridium - got 500 miles on mine and no issues so far, but will keep a check.

Its weird, I went on that ride Saturday and she was runnin great until I left the Cycle Gallery and all of a sudden she was missing and backfiring. I figured somethin was up with the carb so I waited til I got home. Went to pull the plugs and noticed the insulator movinng around as I started to pull the plug cap off. This is the 2nd one that has done this and with the same U shaped crack.
Yeah I know about the micro, have that feature on my BB, but I don't seem to have one on this crappy little phone I'm using right now.

Actually I suspect they run a little bit hotter but they are a cross reference to the Champion plug that S&S recommends.

Maybe the plug can't handle the heat or may not be dissipating the heat as it should, which is causing it to crack.

I've never had, nor even heard of an issue like that with any plug.
I'd check with NGK direct and see what is known about the issue you're having, seeing it happened twice, just not once.
It may be something new to them even.
Maybe you just got a bad batch.

Thats a good point Five. Now that I think about it yes its been the rear cylinder both times.

Now that's really strange.

It might not be a plug problem, it may be a head problem. Let's hope not!

Kaptan.....i'm sure this isn't the case cuz your a good wrench....but you may be inducing a hairline crack during the installation......how many miles you gettin before the plug fails ?

You never know, I use a spark plug socket with a rubber insert buttt.....
After I found the first cracked plug I started being extra careful but the front one isn't cracking just the rear.
This last one probably cracked about 100 miles in to the ride. Thats about when the sputtering and missing started.

Throw a set of champions in there and go for a ride.....use your spark plug socket and an box ended wrench so you can eyeball the sparkplug stem through the opening keeping it tru and centered...if it cracks again then you ruled out Spark Plug Mfg & installation as the root cause.

I have been running those plugs in my harley and both of my dogs for 2 years.Have not had any issues.
