NGK Iridium problem

1) Have you done any motor work to that dog, such as raising the compression, cam or bigger valves?

2) What does the ground electrode look like after you take a cracked plug out, any strike marks of any kind?

How's the other end look? Is it running lean? Thinking maybe it's getting too hot.


Honestly I would stay away from NGK plugs on these or HD v-twins. The threaded on caps where you put your spark plug wires are threaded onto the plugs posts. The vibes on these motors cause them to spin. That alone causes big problems with newer HDs and can cause firing issues due to bad connections on the dogs.

Understand that I have been running the non-iridium NGK version of this plug for like four years with no issues. I only just started using these about a month or so ago.
I had the heads ported and polished and a slightly hotter cam installed. Not sure about the compression I don't think they changed it. But this was all done more than a year ago.
Dead there are NO strike marks on the plug so I have ruled out any mechanical impact.
Bikes running a hair lean but only the slightest amount. Plugs are a really light cinnamon color. I'm running a 32 78 setup and I tried going to a 33 but it richens it up to much.

I guess the KISS rule is going to apply here. If I get one more broken plug in that head then I am switching back to the regular NGK, never broke one of those.

I hear what your saying gas but I have had better luck with the NGKs, overall, than with others so I tend to lean towards them. Albeit most of the problems could probably be traced back to something stupid I did but you know how human nature is......

Thanks for you input guys it helps to have others with experience to bounce ideas and listen too while I work out a problem or issue.

Thats a good point Five. Now that I think about it yes its been the rear cylinder both times.
X2, I was reading about those Iridiums... and yes, that is my case too! only rear cilynder gave me problems... I did not see cracks on the plugs (three times) but they just stop firing a spark on my rear cilynder! :confused:

I have never seen them crack like that either. The normal is they just perform terrible and end up failing down the road with lack of spark. The ignition system is not setup for these plugs. Like I said before, we dyno proved these to not perform as well as the normal non Iridium plugs.
But hey, that deadone guy thinks he knows it all and there is nothing wrong with these plugs :loony: oops did I say that :bang: :D
