Well back up and running for now, buddy gave me a trans till i get the parts for my Baker OD6...it's going to be about $700 for parts...I tore it down (easy to work on) and the failure mode was the needle bearings in the main drive gear failed, which in turn wiped out the main drive shaft and the main drive gear scavenged up some of the needle bearings and meshed em between the main drive gear and the 5th gear countershaft, which resulted in those 2 gears breaking some teeth off....the only tell tale sign leading up to the failure was a noise when i would pull in the clutch and coast...describing this noise sounded like a chain driven drive to rear wheel...very faint noise..

Are you sure you found "all" of those damn needle bearings?

They're hard as hell to make sure that you find them "ALL"!

Those things can trash some stuff, can't they?

Sounds like you may have gotten off easy this go round. :2thumbs:

dead

me too now.. shifted from second to third just cruising and bam, there goes my tranny. ( and some other noises.) no I didn't keep riding mine. Been at the shop since Monday morning. Just got off the ph w them. they are saying it needs a gear kit. per baker if there is any scratches marks or chips it needs to be replaced. Shop is thinking about 2000 for that and is having every piece it needs priced individually. Wow just shaking my head. I called the bdd just to see what they would say just to hear they have never seen a tranny go out on one ever...??? I know I rip mine a lot but cant believe I'm doing something that would shell a baker trans..( SPEED SHIFTING ) By the way after reading this forum I think I was hearing the same noise that five five reported but could not pin point it. I'll take any suggestions besides that sucks because I'm very aware of that.

I always love that response. We've never had a failure or that problem. Yeah right. I've heard that over and over in the car building world of bastard parts.

Oklahoma City, yah I'm w you on that, I thought that sounded a little high too but hey what do I know. thats for the parts only, no labor added yet! I'm going to go by there tom and look at the damage myself and talk about my options. At this point not sure if I have any besides fix it and pay the arm and leg. Oh did I mention possibly my other arm too. I also thought these baker's were bullet proof. Next time someone tells me that I'm going ask what they are shooting. (Red Ryder)................
