glowing pipes

Energy One
Hi All

I dont know if this is a problem or not. It's something I haven"t noticed since I have the new pipes. Those have been on a couple years. Anyway, while warming it up to drain the oil, (it was only a few minutes). (The enrichener was only used to start it then immediately pushed down, seconds). I looked down and noticed my pipes were red hot, (glowing). Is this normal because of the short pipes? There straight too if that helps. Its the first time I started it in the garage and since it's not in the day light this could have been happening all the time. I couldn't tell you how the carb is jetted. It was done by my service guy. In addition, the dog backfires like crazy when leaving off the gas. The shop said that was because of the short pipes. A pic of my dog is on here. It shows the pipes. They"re Eddie Trotta D-2's.

sounds like a lean condition,,, if it has just started & the pipes havent normlly done this I'd check intake leaks,, if it has always done this I'd still check intake leaks if none rejet carb.. or air feul mixture.. pipes shouldnt be red hot,, normally..

My Martin Bros pipe glows all the time but don't notice unless it's dark or in the garage. Never noticed this with my 2 sets of Stainless Creations. I think the Martin Bros pipe is very thinned walled as it's a very light pipe. I don't have any exhaust leaks and it's properly jetted.
Will be putting the SC drags back on once I get them welded up again and will update.

Pipes glowing red is a lean condition and will shorten your engine life more so than if you were running rich.

Thanks for the information everyone. Re-jetting the carb or at least adusting it is something Im not sure how to do. I may need to trust the shop on this.

backfire on decel i would agree with the others on lean condition.i run martin bros pipes and have never seen them glow.jetting is pretty easy job.hope you get it ironed out.

I looked at the "how to" from Gas. It seems pretty straight forward. My only question is...Since I have straight (short) pipes will those instructions get me close to were I need to be? If I do need to change the jets, assuming I have a lean condition,do I buy the next size jet or should I get two sizes right away> Hopefully that makes some sense.

I wish I had more money.
Is there a dyno in your area? If money isn't to bad right now that would be the way to go. That shoud get you dead nuts on.

Honestly I always suggest just buying the entire high range jet kit. Cost about $40 for the kit and it will cover all you need with your carb. Some shops (not many actual HD shops though) will carry individual jets.

Do you even know what jets you have in the bike?

What mods to it?

No. I don't know what jets are in there now. There are no dealerships around my area. The closest one is 2 hours and I haven't heard anything good about them. Regarding the dyno runs, I can research it. The dyno runs I see at Bike Weeks can't accomidate the long wheel base. Because you mentioned something, someone must be able to do it.

The Pipes are the only modification I did concerning the performance. Everything else was cosmetic.

GAS - are that jet kit available at a harley dealer? Where would I find them?

On a side note - the air filter is very dirty and I need a new one. Other than the dealer, where would I get one?

Mobile dyno guys like Speeds Performance Plus and Dr Dyno are always at the major events and each have websites lisiting upcoming runs and they can accomodate your bike. They've done mine!
