Is this Happening to Mastiffs??

Seems like only K9 and Ridgeback?
Has any Mastiff owners had cable break issues?
Is this certain years?

If you search the net, it's nearly any type of bike and regardless of year; the issue being the construction of the cable, and not the bike it's being used on. I believe it's a dissimilar metal problem that causes the barrels to bind in the handle. Barnetts mod should do the trick and they say it has.
As for switching to hydraulic, I'm with BikersDream on this one; stay with the cable!! You can at least limp it home, you may even just carry a pair of vice grips which can be used as a make shift shifter when latched onto the shift post at the case.

A repair kit would save a lot of us. I remember them in the old days but don't see them anymore.

Might be something for some of the machinist/mechanics on here to look into.

2, one at 5000, and the second at 14000. Chris thanks for the heads up on Barnett stepping up and repairing them at no cost. Plus I am installing the 08 ball and ramp on mine it makes them tull a lot easie, kind of like the easy clutch.

I remember reading somewhere the clutch was redisgned in 08 (for Pitbulls anyhow) supposedly needing less force and easier on your hand, etc. Wonder if that has curbed any of these cable breakage incidents...

Just bought the soft clutch kit . Standard on all 08-09. Good winter project. That should be next week in upstate NY!!

Hw do you "limp home" with a broken cable? I never once was able to "limp home" with a broken cable, after three of them. I have over 7000 miles on my hydraulic clutch with zero issues so far. It has a dramatically easier pull and I "never" have to adjust it, unlike my cable system. Not to mention no exposed cables is dramaticaaly sweeter looking than a cable. Don't go ballistic on me please I am just asking for real life examples because if hydraulic clutches do have issues I would like to be prepared in advance. Also, since I have pipes that lay over the clutch adjustment access the pipes have to be removed to replace the clutch cable, not something I want to do with a simple tool roll on the side of the freeway. Any intelligent, accurate responses would be greatly appreciated.

I'm on my 2nd, 1st one stranded me couple hundred miles from home, goood times, BD warranty it that was around 4000 miles, BD put a diff clutch in and was alot eaiser pull than the 1st one

I believe "limp home" is a generic term. When there is something wrong with the bike and you do what you have to get it home or safe.

Limp home with a broken clutch cable... can be done. I had to do it when my basket nut came loose. The cable wasn't so much broken but useless. I was able to sometimes shift as the basket walked in & out on the trans input shaft splines. Did what I had to, to avoid traffic lights, moreso the red ones. I rode with a buddy one time that broke his clutch cable... stayed in third and did the same thing I did.

Lee, recently, limped his bike home when he shredded up his final drive belt. Easy on the throttle, etc.

My HD has a limp home mode. When my fly by wire throttle went whacky it put the bike into "limp home" mode. Bike ran fine but only had 50% throttle open via the ecm controlling the throttle body. Rode it 40 miles that way, even on the highway...

Oooops, should have said what I came here to say instead of just yappin at Gas Man.

I can "limp home" with a broken hydraulic "cable" too.

I'm sure most every ones' cables are breaking

Barnett's cable mod uses a hard plastic sleeve that slips over the barrel before the cable is swagged. The sleeve acts as a bearing which allows the barrel to move more freely in the handle there by keep the inner cable aligned with the outer. The assembly looks identical to the old installation except for a dark gray outer sleeve.
Theoretically if this works as a better bearing surface, then all the problems are solved for Barnett and us. I received the cable after repair in quick time, and the people at Barnett were pleasant enough; of course I'm already out almost half the cost in a new cable in shipping costs.
I'm giving them credit for taking it serious and finding a fix for this cable breaking. But I swear if it happens again I will be beyond pissed. This cable I just installed is the third one, so I guess you could say, I've had two out of three break so far.

Does anyone know if barnett is actually making a change to their cables like this guy mentions?
