hey guys this mite be kinda long. i been reading some posts bout leaks and venting and oil caps popping off etc.. i called S&S tech --guy was helpful and stayed on phone w me for bout 30-40 mins .he was great guy and explained alot to me... i first had smoking from my exhaust (oil smoke) i followed some good advice removed and blocked off front hose from head and routed rear hose to ground. smoking stopped. i also vented flywheel cavity w hose and pcv valve. last week i noticed oil leaking around crankcase bolt under rear cylinder. looking on S&S site i saw a technical bulletin rellating to the same problem only for the front bolt directly opposite where my leak was.. so anyway i call S&S tech tell him my whole story and he tells me everything ive done is great, but the most likely problem -relating to all my issues is too much oil. i tell him ive changed oil inc draining crankcase and filled w 3 quarts per manual.. he tells me that on bikes w oil tank like mine, the oil tank cavity is to small and pressure is building- pushing oil out wherever it can... he proceds to tell me 2 and a half quarts of oil is most i should fill. dont know if this applies to everyone, but i can say it all l seems to be "right " when im half quart low. wat do you guys think?? by the way ... the crankcase bolt leak has a repair bulleting that includs replacing the case bolt washer w metal washer w rubber center.. i ordered 2 and gonna put them on also.

I had alot of blow-by into my air cleaner. I rerouted the back breather line to a puke can cause i didnt want oil to get on my back tire for obvious reasons. I also installed the reed-type valve in the cam chest and went to 2.5 qts of oil. no probs in a year now.

Yeah I'm not buying it. It just dont make sense. Your capacity is determined by your oil bag size. That should have nothing to do with your motor leaking oil.

Also, you don't drain the oil from the case drain. FYI

thanks for the info, by the way, I always drain tank, case and change the filter to get every drop out, I mean, I wouldnt go get an oil change on my truck/car/boat and tell them to leave a quart of dirty oil in the oil pan, if its dirty get it all out.

You still aren't guy.

You simply aren't suppose be pulling that drain. You can cause your oil pump to loose suction.

If you want to do it correctly... learn something.

i had only done the crankcase drain once when i switched to Amsoil.i have discovered since i shouldnt have, but thanks. i really wouldnt even call it a leak just a seep, from that bolt anyway... but it must be something to that washer deal. there is a bulletin on the S&S site about it...... i just wish i felt confident about where the oil level ACTUALLY is supposed to be....really thats the only part i wana keep strait. my bike runs terrific and doesnt use any extrodinary amount of oil ..smoking is gone since the hose reroute... but after reading the other guys issues i wanted to hear what S&S said. and you have all read it.im gonna ride it a lil low and let you guys know how it goes

well, when I first started having venting problems I called bdm, the service guy told me it sounded like I had too much oil in it, so to make sure I have the right amount of oil in the system was to get all the oil out and start fresh and informed me to drain the case, tank and change the filter, I started doing that after I was told, now as far as I know this guy didnt have a clue what he was saying but if a service rep tells me to do it a certain way then thats what I do.

this is the first v-twin I have ever owned, so I am still learning, can never have too much knowledge, so thanks for that info on the scavenger gas man.

BDM service guy told me the same Wildman, but as far as draining the crankcase ...more knowledgeable people say no.. i also understand that the crankcase drain can be a problem area and the threads will strip very easily.

well chris, Ive been changing the oil like that every time since, and no problems with stripping, oil pump cavatation or anything else, I hate to go another direction now that I found something that works but am still somewhat open for suggestions.

I use the scavanger also. You will get more oil out with it than draining the crankcase!!!! After draining the crank case you still have OLD oil in all the lines in the system. Using the scavanger gets even that old oil. You don't have to buy the Scav unit you could fab something like a 16oz coke bottle to use and do the same thing just that the scav makes it easier!!!!:2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs:Hope this helps bro!!!!:cheers:Thats what we are all on here for.... to learn and hopefully help when we can!!!!:whoop:
