oil in the air cleaner housing?

Good morning all,
I did a search on this but couldn't find similar issues so I thought I'd ask here. I have an '04 Chopper DT 107ci with about 10.7k miles, stock air breather, Mean Mother exhaust, the rest is stock. When I remove the air cleaner cover to check the filter, the backside of the filter cover is covered with oil, and to some degree, the filter as well. Is this normal? If not what should I check for? In the last 300 miles, I've pulled the cover twice, and both times have had a pretty heavy oil film on the cover. My bike doesn't smoke at all so I'm assuming that the rings are good, right?
thanks for all of your help!

I've always noticed a little oil on the back cover when I remove it. Same thing when I had my Harley. A guy at the dealership said you can place a "feminine napkin" in the bottom of the cover and it will absorb a lot of the oil if you have problems with it actually leaking onto the motor.

Its normal unless there is alot of oil. Its blow by. Some guys use puke cans instead of letting it go in the air cleaner. Make sure the bike isnt over serviced 1st and then just watch it.
I lost a top half of my motor. Top ring on piston came apart due to a dentination problem and due to bad forging by S&S but cant prove it so it was a rebuild for me and now I have a little blow by but good to go.

I have a 107 motor out of a 2004 BD chopper in my custom. (it was a new motor but has about 5000 miles now). It has always had a little oil residue on th bottom inside of the air cleaner cover (BD stock). I just thinly roll a paper towel and wipe it along the inside bottom of the cover each time I wipe down the bike.

Normal and not a problem for me.

yeah, my luck- I would get the one without the price on it and the cashier would have to call for a price check over the intercom...

Now see, that's the difference between us Mc. I couldn't tell you the difference between a tampon and a maxi pad, so I just used the generic "feminine napkin". Sounds like you've made that purchase before.:roll: I remember one time my sister in law asked me to get her some "Mini-Thins". Hell, I figured that was a smaller version of Maxi pad. I finally had to ask for help at the store, only to find out it was some kind of diet pill.:roll:

My 04 Chopper does the same thing, but a little worse.
I noticed it on my pipe, and after investigating it, found it to be coming from the air cleaner.
I also noticed a little drip coming out of the front clear tube down onto the garage floor. Hope thats not something getting ready to "happen".

I have heard of that happening when you put a little too much oil in your bike. You might want to try putting a little less in your oil tank. Just a thought!

I had the same motor you have in my 03 Mastiff and while I was commuting 100 miles a day I would always have a oil spray on the oil bag. I would wipe it down everyday then I ran the hose to the ground with a small filter on it. All that did was change the location of the oil spray. Coated all the underside of the bike and leaked on the brake!
So then I got one of those oil cans. Same thing all it did was spray out the top of the filter. That motor sure liked to breath I guess. Was so happy when I got my 05 with the Twin-Cam breather system. It's not a problem anymore.

Guess what I'm saying is you are just going to have to live with it unless you change the breather in the cam chest or do something else.

Here is some other ways to collect that oil.

Bottom line boys, is that the oil is probably mostly coming from your rear breather. Its plumbed into the backside of the air cleaner backing plate. Remove it from there, plug that and run the hose to the floor. Just be sure to keep the check valve in place with white side facing the motor.

I have seen the same thing to a friends 03 pit and an 04 pitbull, to much oil in the tank. Check you manual, it states this exact thing if theres too much in there.
