I have intermittent knocking in the enginine mostly at Idle, I can feel it through the frame...When I take off it's not there at all...smooth....

I had the Idle screw out some to stop the back firing, then turned it back about 1 turn to bring the idle to a hair about 1000 rpm's...The knock is almost gone, not as bad...but still there some at idle......Any Ideas???.....

I thinking of a visit to C&C cycles tomorrow...

I had something like that once on my Harley. I found the nut on my primary chain adjuster had backed off and the adjuster slid down. This made the chain loose enough to flop around and hit the primary case when I was idling...

Cool...not much to fix???....man I hope so....I'd be really bummed if there was somnething really wrong with the motor already....

Hey Red i would make sure you have an appt with them. Seems this time of year they get pretty backed up and only prioritize customers that have scheduled appts. Both me and Semi had appts with them on different things and they still took longer then expected. Good luck.

What was the idle speed set at and for how long? Probably not the issue, but I have always been under the impression that idle speed needs to be in the 1000 range to maintain proper oil pressure. I have always been worried about the hammering an engine takes at low RPM's.

I am not a wrench, but just going by what I understand to be correct.

yuppers, made the appointment with C&C and they took me right in...working on it....seams the shaft in the primary was loose......so there tightening things up....good thing I went down there....

The clutch shaft was slightly loose, which made the throw out bearing fail...which made the clutch cable of no use...and the knock I was feeling was from the clutch shaft slightly hitting the primary cover because it was loose...only at idle though....at high speeds it would straighten out and it would be perfectly smooth, motor wise....and I ride normally...don't do burn outs and pretty much baby this bike....plus it only has 2700 miles on her...Crazy....So don't know why that happened...other than that the bike runs perfect...

So that's the deal....C&C is still working on it...there pretty busy down there right now....

I have the same symtoms ... a little knocking noise at idle not always there ... does anybody know what the procedure is to tighten the clutch shaft with pix? thanks :up:

just an observation here but from your first post you seem to be getting your idle mixture and idle speed screws mixed up a little. Presumably you are wanting to richen up your idle mixture to help with exhaust popping but you seem to be playing with your idle speed screw.

I have the same knock at idle, if I hold the clutch in the noise goes away or at least dramatically reduced. I am going to have my 10,000 service in the next two weeks.

Need some clarification please - the symptoms you describe - slight knock at idle - disappears on high revs -
Does it disappear when pulling the clutch as well? Just as "Throttle" describes?

Next - can you please clarify what you mean by "clutch shaft was loose" is this the shaft that protrudes from the tranny – upon which the clutch basket mounts?

Hey Staffy,

My clutch cable came disengaged.

The clutch shaft which holds the clutch basket was loose, which also made the throw out bearing loose which in turn made my clutch cable have no engagement. Felt like my clutch cable snapped. The shaft came loose which at idle was hitting the inside of the primary cover which gave the knocking sound and feel. Very bad and you should go to the dealer and service dealer and have them take the primary cover off and check the shaft. There is also and washer that is behind the clutch basket that they told me was of a material that needed to be changed. Big Dog said there's a washer they replaced back there that is a diferent material that keeps the shaft tight once again.

hope that helps, but I would have it checked asap. It's not a good deal.

Red, I think you are referring to the "Clutch nut" having backed off - correct?
If so that seems to be occurring on many bikes....

I guess....all I know is the shaft was loose..lol...and there is a washer in the back somewhere that needs to be replaced that will help keep it tight...BUT what I was told and what happened to mine most likly that the guy who owned my K9 before me really had know idea how to ride and beat the bike it to death....The service dealer told me that you can't ride these bikes like race bikes because there not....he said he see's all kinds of Big Dogs come in his shop for clutch and shaft issues because people don't know how to ride these bikes....he said Big Dog makes an awesome product but people have no clue how to ride them and he said you can't ride it like you stole it....just his words..lol....anyway.....so we will see how it goes.,...good luck getting your fixed I hope yours turns out good...Mine will be soon like new again....
