Clutch Problem?

Was pulling out from a gas station and as I shifted from 2nd to 3rd I heard a clunk followed by the ugly sound of heavy drive belt rub. I pulled over and the outer edge of the drive belt was worn, the clutch cable is looser than normal, belt also touches tire now. In neutral, if I push the dog back, it feels like the belt is slipping on the forward sprocket. just grabbing a bite to eat before I go out and pull the exhaust and clutch to see what's going on... wish me luck! :bang:

My drive pully came loose years ago and I recognized it when I backed the bike out of the garage every morning. The Tranny sprocket nut is locked in with a couple of hex bolts but somehow they wore and caused the nut to come loose.

Let us know what you found out.

But Ray would that effect the clutch? I wouldn't think so...
No, wouldn't think so but it would cause the other issues he stated with the belt rubbing the tire the backing up issue he stated. Same problem as I had.

With the 08 he may have the loose clutch nut that many experience with this year of bike.

You won't believe this... Found the problem, it seems the bolt for my sissy bar fell out, and got pulled into the front drive pulley. Chewed the belt pretty good and wore an ugly groove in the pulley. I used plenty of loctite when I installed the sissy bar, and as my luck would have it, the bolt didn't just bounce and hit the ground. Guess I need to order a belt and a pulley... will post pics soon.

I install a 12" sissybar on occasion and use a clear piece of heavy adhesive tape to cover the bottom of the fender strut to keep the bolt from falling out if it loosens.

I don't want to hijack this thread but this is the first I seen of a known problem with '08 models having loose clutch nuts. I just checked my belt and it's right on my rear tire. No sign of rubbing yet, but......

Anyone else having this problem? :confused:

I just tried to slide a business card between and it's closer than the width of the business card. Ray mentioned a known problem with '08's having clutch nut problems and tire rub. With Daytona coming I'd rather fix any known problem so I can have some worry-free ridin.

Don't know if this happened with your sissy bar, but I also have a 2008 K9 and purchased the 12 inch as well. Sissy bar shipped with bike - not installed, so I installed. The sissy bar's milling was about a qtr inch to shallow for the bolts that came with the kit, they would never seat deep enough. Had to go to a hardware store and buy some hardened hex bolts to replace. I'll do the clear tape trick today as well.

I bought my sissy bar at the same time I purchase my bike but I installed it myself. I only use it when my wife rides so I take it off and put it on regularly. The bolts have lock washers on them and I snug them down and haven't ever noticed them working loose, even a little.

Ah, well mine will certainly get a credit card. I currently measuring .105 with ~3k mile Avon. I'm trying to find the specs in the service manual for us; but unfortunately I'm not seeing it JJ.

{I think it used to run closer though when I had the previous tire on it; not so much because of tire difference but because of where belt shifted on front pulley a little maybe. don't think dealer aligned it correctly honestly - why I was asking on here before}
