Circuit breakers....

Hey guys, I'm having to change out my VR and circuit breaker 40 amp and I needed the vertical mount CB and Donna sent me the horizonal, so nut won't even fit on the flange. My question though is my original CB says SHORTSTOP 24VDC P12 40A, the one she sent shows SHORTSTOP 12V E31 40A. Should I be concerned? I'm seeing 40 amp fuses being installed instead, what do these look like?

It appears, someone installed a different circuit breaker before you bought the bike sir.

The two CB's listed above are 40A.

Both will work, they will both open circuit at 40 amps.

The voltage must be equal to or greater then the circuit.

You are working on a 12V system sir.

Hope this helps.

I put a inline 40 amp weather proof fuse on mine. Ether will work. I felt better with the fuse. I know it will blow with more than 40 amps. Both are just there to protect your battery if something in the charging circuit goes bad. You would have to fix the problem before using the bike again.

I bought mine new, so not sure why it's different, but if Donna doesn't have the vertical mount, then I'll make this one work.
Thanks Savage for your reply.

Maybe check with Curtis out at Wildsteed Works if you don't mind waiting a few days. He may have them in stock.

Possibly pick one up local with the same mounting fixture?

There are always self tapping screws in a pinch.....just a few suggestions Bud

Just for information purposes, I noticed Big Dog out of Wichita is using 32 Amp charging systems on their new models. Could there be something to this. My 2006 pit came with a 40 amp system. It now has a 32 Amp charging system.

I can't help with that one Bud, I've never seen a BIG Dog during those years with a stator larger then 32A.

In fact, I really wouldn't see the need or benefit.

I've got a 40A compufire in the efi big dog, had one in the last one too.
Not sure what's in the blue one but if it goesbad it gets a 40A compufire for sure.
Does it need all that - no, is it overkill, Yes. But I like over kill!
Gives me some extra power for accessories (like heated gear etc)

Well update, finally got a new VR and circuit breaker installed, fired right up as always, then blows the 20 amp inline fuse from circuit breaker to positive battery side, which then doesn't charge the battery. WTF? Stator readings were fine when tested. What could be blowing this fuse after the circuit breaker?

Crazy as it sounds but check ur headlamp bulb. I had WiresPlus in the Pitbull that would blow fuses if the headlamp blew both high n low. If you dont have the upgraded ceramic plug I would recommend changing it. Just my thoughts.

Is there any specific reason you are using a 20 amp fuse Boss?

I guess that's what it came with when I bought it new. Not sure why it's between the 40 amp circuit breaker and the battery, but that's how it came. Just getting it back to normal...... New VR came with a hot lead to the battery from the circuit breaker without a fuse, but scared I'll fry the battery.

Thanks for the info, please see attached wiring diagram. I'm not seeing the fuse. I'm confused as to why it is installed inline on the same circuit that already contains the 40 amp circuit breaker.

I am also perplexed by this. Is it a fail safe for the fail safe ? There should be one or the other not both.

It is actually required when installing a Electronik EHC, which I switched over to back in 2017.

Thanks for the update, had no idea EHC was changed.

Did they provide a wiring diagram with specific location of 20amp fuse within the installation instructions?
