If the springs have the red stripe it should be a triple wound S&S .640 Spring set. Haven't seen a red stipe 2 spring set up, sounds like the inner spring is missing. My 05 had a 2 spring set up with a flat wound internal dampener, but this is not a triple spring set up looks like a triple set up but it is not like the S&S .640 springs

OK, the word is in!

My mechanic says that the small piece of metal found in the oil pump definitely came from the valve guide breaking. He thought it was odd that it managed to work its way to the oil pump, but said it could have found its way down thru the push rods.

He was also surprised at the amount of play in the valve guide, saying that with my mileage one would expect about a 20 thousandths of an inch play, and mine had about 1/2 inch!!! Said the motor must have been running like crap, which I can certainly attest to as not only was it burning oil, but a lot of times it would sputter and/or back fire.

My cylinders are going to be honed, and I am going with the .600 cam. He's also going to check with S&S about the rocker box being changed from the TP to the S&S. He's mostly doing this out of curiosity as he'd just like to learn more about the Big Dog setup. This guy normally only works on Harleys, but has about 20+ years experience and is a VERY trustworthy, good mechanic. His machinist friend that now has my heads and cylinders has about 30 years experience.

Thank you everyone for your input. I'll keep you posted as this thing gets wrapped up, though it may not be until next week.

Yeah, besides the sputtering, oil burning, back firing and blow-by out the air cleaner that was soaking the right side of the engine and bike... no problems!

Could this valve guide mess have come about due to the TP rocker box? Should be interesting to see what my mechanic finds out thru S&S.

Looking forward to getting the bike back as it'll probably run better than I can remember.

Rockers... Boxes... damn, so many parts! So if the guy gets the rockers properly setup, then there shouldn't be any issues, even with the TP setup?

So much for me to learn. I'll get my brain wrapped around all this yet.

Yeah, I like the idea of going with the S&S components, except for the cost of course.

However, my mechanic is under the impression that the heads are different with this TP setup, as he's seeing that the bolt sizes are different between the S&S and TP.
I remember seeing somewhere though in a thread here that the heads and the baseplate that bolts to the head is the same. I also know from looking around this site that people have made the change from TP to S&S, without changing the heads.

I could have sworn there was a "how-to" how doing this change, but maybe I'm mistaken.

I have the TP rocker boxes on my 06 and asked bigdog about changing them out and they said no. Bike had about 7500 miles on it when I asked. Unless they have a recall I have to run mine. I have 12,000 miles on it now and its still running. I'm going to run it till it quits.

Starting to sound like my wild guess was pretty accurate. :D

Bumming now cause my clutch is slipping on one of the biggest bike weekends of the year here. Tell me it's just an adjustment thing Beez :cry:

FWIW,you better have your tech replace all 4 guides,as he should be able to see the major wear on 1 side of each guide.:eek:
S&S rocker boxes are a direct bolt on.If the bolt sizes changed,then someone screwed up!No need to replace anything but the rocker boxes and rocker arms.Use S&S rocker arms only.:up:
Now would be a good time to upgrade your valve springs.S&S red stripe springs now come without the flat dampner(some call it the 3rd spring).Only better springs I've found,are AV-V (VSK650T) .650" lift springs.Realize that the S&S .640" cam is PURE HELL on exhaust valve springs.:rolleyes:
If you're going to use S&S springs,then you can't use big top(.530")guides.:(

even though the ssw+ is an evo style with a single cam the jugs, heads and rocker boxes are twin cam style for breather purpose.

also the ssw+ has a 4 1/8" bolt pattern for the jugs and heads but still a standard TC style rocker box will fit.

Just to update you guys, I finally got my bike back from having the engine rebult, and all is well!!!

No more sputtering, no more oil shooting out of the air cleaner and coating the right side of the bike, no more burning oil, and that annoying tendency of the bike wanting to stall as soon as it began to warm up appears to be gone too! Oh yeah, and it takes off now like a raped ape!

Basically my bike needed all new valves, valve guides, and pistons (since the cylinders were bored to 10 over). On top of that, I had the tappets replaced, even though the old ones were fine. S&S suggests replacing them after 25,000 miles, so at 57,000 I figure I might as well do those too. I also had an S&S 600 cam put in.

Damn, it's like having a new bike!

Hopefully I'll be good for another 50,000+ miles. All set now for Street Vibrations coming up soon.
