Yup, it's an electrical question

Hi all,

I have an 04 BD Chopper RT frame. I'm pretty sure my EHC is done but I want to run it buy you guys before I spend coin I don't have. Bike is never left outside (only sees rain if I'm already on it) I've had trouble starting the bike, new battery voltage is good starter motor working. It does start but when it when it won't if I leave it a few minutes and try again it will usually fire up (not flooded also checked the plugs no issues) recently I've had the bike just shut off a few times while riding (scared the crap outta me) then have had trouble starting it up. I think it's my EHC, anyone think otherwise? Also I'm looking at the Big Dog EHC RIP kit but I see guys talking about the WSW kit. What do you recommend and why? Keep in mind it's an 04

Lots of threads on this topic, do some searching and reading, there is 3 options, ECS, RIP-1 & 2 and Axels, choose which is best for you. I personally have DOC's ECS.
First I would verify that your battery is good meaning have it load tested, and 2nd, when its running do a voltage check to make sure its charging.

Start with the simple things first. Do you have a red light on, on the ignition module. It may also be a broke wire in the ignition circuit. That's what I found on my 04.

New battery fully tested, I checked my lights (will check again) was green. Ignition circuit is a great idea I'll give that a look but would cause a shut down?

hmmm ya a short would do it. Where was your ignition circuit problem? I did replace the positive wire going to the battery already ( no change)

Ignition box, is the silver box. It has 3 lights. red one shows it has power, the other two indicate which cyl. is firing. The cam sensor is located in the nose nose cone, on the right side of the engine. Providing your 04 has the 107 ci. engine

My 04 has the RIP1 had to replace the original ECH because the the thunderhart ignition module was not getting enough voltage from the EHC and would not function properly and bike would not start.
A year after replacing the EHC the bike would die and sometimes start back up and sometimes not until a few hours later. I did notice that again the thunderhart ignition module was not acting properly the red light would come on if I press the run button and go out as it is supposed to do but would not flash while cranking, so I replaced the cam sensor and everything works as it should.

Thanks, that gives me a few things to check. I did check the fuel already replaced the plugs and ran a tester. I also replaced the battery and tested the voltage. I haven't tested the ignition module. It's -10 here right now so I gotta wait a few days so I don't freeze

Please check your spark plugs wires. I have had the same thing happen to my 07 K9. I went thru everything you're going thru. I had everything checked out that everyone is suggesting and it turned out to be the spark plugs wires.

Question: If your coil is good and you have new spark plugs but your chopper won't fire up, why not? Answer: Replace the spark plug wires. Reason: Coil sends electricity to spark plug but if the spark plug wires are no good then electricity can't get to the spark plug because spark plug wires are bad. A spark plug wire (especially with Big Dog's high compression S&S 117 cubic inch engines) must have at least 40 ohms of resistance per inch of wire to create a strong enough spark to energize and keep the engine running. This happened to me and my 07 Big Dog K-9 last weekend and after going thru all you're going thru I finally bought new ACCELL spark plug wires that originally came with my BDM K-9. Pretty simple

Thanks for the RIP mounted pictures. I used it for inspiration to mount all of my components. I didn't think that all of that crap would fit in that small area!
