Yet another speedometer issue

Hi guys!
I've spent some time reading / searching the forum trying to determine what's wrong with my speedo, but as every issue is somewhat unique, here's mine:

Key on, speedo lights up and goes down below 0, then up to 25, then back to 0. I've read it should go up to 60, right?

Odometer doesn't register any new miles.

Trying to recalibrate it doesn't help, instead of showing the registered number for pulse count it shows "Err" (I guess because it doesn't register any miles).

I bought the speedo on ebay, it was taken off from a dog (don't know what model/year) with 8300 miles on it and looked pretty good.

My original speedo had a metal casing, this one has a plastic one, if that means something.

My original speedo used to do a 0 - 60 check, but that's all it did because it was wet and rusty.

Also, I have no idea if the speed sensor is still good, but I recently changed transmission oil and it looked pretty clean to me.
Any specific method to clean the speed sensor and/or test it?

Sorry for the long post, I just wrote every detail I noticed, maybe someone figures this out.

PS: I'm in Europe, Romania - ordering parts here takes an eternity, so I'd rather fix what I already have If I can :D

I wish I had more money.
I would pull the speedo censor and clean it with some brakeclean or something. On my bike the censor has a small hole/demple in it. I believe this is a magnet. Make sure it's really clean. Start there. Tell us what you find.

Ok, so far I've narrowed the problem down to the speed sensor. I pulled it out, it was clean, I tried waving a screwdriver in front of it while measuring it - no reading on my tester.

A friend had a sensor from a '97 Road King and even though it had a different plug, it seemed to fit and work when connecting the wires.

Is it safe to order a similar part from a Harley Dealer? Or will I end up spending money on something that is unlikely to work properly?

Anyone replaced his speed sensor with a different one?

Thanks guys.

So your saying your buddies harley sensor fixed the problem and now your speedo works ... correct ?

I didn't test it enough, I mean I just loosely connected the wires to the harley sensor and turn the wheel by hand and my speedo seemed to indicate it was receiving signal.

I think it would work properly after a speedo recalibration. But since the harley sensor had a different plug then mine, I coudn't just slice it up and solder it because it didn't belong to me.

If your 03 has a baker trans., I would call them they have always been very helpful to me. they may even have the right part to sell you.

I currently have a Harley Sensor in my '03. It is NOT 100% accurate. I noticed that I start to bleed off MPH around 70 to 75.

This is probably your best bet.

Well, the Thunder Heart sensor I bought from denniskirk.com works just fine and is very accurate after a speedo recalibration.

I think my problem is solved, thank you all for your ideas.
