X-Wedge

Just curious, hadn't heard or seen anything in a while. Did the X-Wedge ever really take off. Haven't heard of anyone using them now and haven't seen any. I was watching porn, saw some things that I didn't recognize and the question just came to me....must be getting old. Gotta go now and see if I can figure out what they're up to.

SKOGDOG

One of the old ones.
They are the engine used in the 2009 and 2010 BD Wolf, and I have read (somewhere) positive things, but have not seen a formal analysis of them, except for The S&S website, which I suspect of bias.....o_O. They are of course commercially available, and I'd love to know what the custom builders think of them.
In reading many rider comments, the only themes I noted were high levels of customer satisfaction with the engine. Jonathan is right--- there was a problem with timing belts failing in the 2009 (early production) engines. Turns out that happened mostly in the south and they figured out it was due to excessive heat. The belt simply got too hot and disassembled. Happily, the engine does not suffer damage from the valves striking the pistons--it just quits dead....So they installed a spacer (washer) in the camshaft timing belt cover mount bolts and that cooled it adequately. Replace the belt and install spacers (washers)--problem solved.
A few design differences:
It has a 56 degree design instead of our traditional V-twin 45 degrees.
It has three cams--one intake and two exhaust, run by a belt.
The combustion chamber is wedge shaped (hence the name x-wedge).
It has cast iron cylinder sleeves and round fins for more even heat transfer.
It has regular bearings instead of roller bearings, with a much heavier one piece crankshaft (smooths the idle).
It has 5 studs per cylinder as opposed to four, a significantly stronger design.

Most of the Wolfs (sp?) coming up for sale are low mileage, so I haven't seen much from guys who ride hard. Currently there is one in CA for sale with the most miles I've ever seen---20K. I'm seriously looking at buying one to tour with, and if I do, I'll let you know. And to be clear, I have no reservations about plunking down cash for a bike with that engine. It seems to be a well engineered, and addresses some of the issues created by making larger and larger V-twin engines.

I have the 09 Wolf... Love it... made a few mods for comfort, but the bike is by far the best I've ever owned. The X-Wedge is a great engine. The only flaw was in the first year's design. There was no compression release, so at start up, the starter was over-working to get the engine to turn... S&S addressed it with 569 compression release cams, which made all the difference... smooth, immediate start... The next year, the cams were added as a stock item.
Secondary issue, is that the EPA regulations lock up a substantial amount of the engine's potential... but I'm working on it.
There have been a few other little things that you would expect with a first year roll out, but would recommend the bike to anyone. Just be prepared to do a little hunting for parts or part information. Only a few of those bikes were ever made. I have the manuals, but even then, they are pretty vague. If anyone needs info or scans from the manual, let me know... be happy to get it to you. I will work on getting the entire manual scanned into a PDF for everyone.

I love my 10' Wolf. The EPA X-Wedge needs some help. What mods are you doing other than, maybe, cams? Any suggestions on finding a rear tire?

They are shorter and have one less piston ring, and do NOT ever put a normal C Clip in them, they take an XWEDGE wrist pin clip....normal will fit, but will NOT HOLD!!!

I have over 18K on my 09 Wolf. Early on S & S replaced the lower case as when it was made, an error was made in manufacturing and created an oil leak. I also had the cam belt replaced due to failure early on. I have over 15k on the replaced belt with no problems. I have enjoyed the Wolf as I upgraded the cams, throttle body, dual runner air cleaners and the unlocked S & S ECH. Custom made fiberglass saddlebags were also installed on the bike. Great Bike
