WTF is this

Greetings All,
for those who came in late i purchased a K9 '08 here in Australia and had had flasher issues to the point that some weeks ago Dead Dog and i rode in the rain and now i have nothing except head light and tail light and ignition. Both Dead Dog and i have had some intelligent so and so install a flasher unit and rewire the flasher circuit.:bang:

The following pic's are of my bike.

Pic #1 is of my right hand control where a black wire has been soldered into the circuit board which in turn runs back to the flasher unit.

Pic #2 and #3 are of the old left hand circuit board with a wiz bang switch that someone has installed, it has a wire running from the post to the switch then to a black wire that runs back to the flasher unit.

Pic #4 is the flasher unit and shows the wiring looped into the harness.

Pic #5 is of the wiring harness, you can see how they have cut the wires and insulated them the blue and brown wires are running to the rear flashers.

Q. Does anyone have a clue why this has been done?
Q. Does this mean that the flasher part of the EHC is fried?
Q. Does anyone think that replacing the EHC with a WP unit and trying to re-connect the original wires with fix my problems?
Q. Would replacing the wiring harness as well as a WP be the answer?

Any help would be appreciated, also does anyone in Australia know anyone who can install a WP unit, we have 2 fantastic bikes that can't be ridden.
Cheers

RETIRED
Looks like someone has bypassed the orignal parts to keep the lights working. You might want to look for an inline fuse somewhere along the new wires. There are some great trouble shooters on here, give them time to wake up and i'm sure they will pipe in.

First questions to understand:

- where did you buy the bike? US or down under?

- do you still have the American rear lights?

- if it was in Australia:
how are your rear lights working? Are you allowed to have the combined red brake/turn lights?

I'm just asking as I also had to rewire the lights on my bike due to European legislation.
We have red brake lights, yellow! turn lights and red rear lights.
No combined brake/turn lights allowed.

May be somebody tried to match your Australian legislation on automotive lighting ?

I myself was told how to install a new wire for the brake lights WITHOUT frying the EHC. May be this could help

EDIT: I now saw that you bought the bike in AUS.

That looks like a mess. If I was in your situation.... I would order a new power harness from BDM...if they don't have it, there people who do, also I would order from BDM a left and right PCB board. Then call Wiresplus. Your EHC is on it's way out. There are many different signs the ECH does before going dead. What your EHC did is one of them.

I have a spare L/H and R/H curcit board ready to go, i have pulled off the tank and cleaned all the conections and put dialetic grease on them and still have a short somewhere, started eliminating every wire and still no closer.
Spoke to a close friend who has put a WP unit in his old Shovel, he is willing to help but that is a few weeks away. WP has no units for 3 weeks mininum plus time to ship it here.
Does anyone have a harness they want to sell?

Found a 32 and a 50 pin harness on ebay, but my manual says 36 and 50 pin for an 08 K9. Which is right????

You have two connectors that plug into your EHC. I believe the 50 pin is the one going through your back bone and comes out under your tank. The 36 pin is the one going to your oil sending unit, rear brake light, starter, tag light and horn. The easiest way to tell, is the harness coming out of your back bone, disconnect it, flip it upside down and count the pin holes. That would be the best way for you to make sure.

So a 32 and a fifty, is what i counted, so i will get those and a WP today.
Last evening i decided to get a beer and sit a try to figure out what obvious thing is causing my prob's, i started with pulling apart the EHC and it's plugs cleaning and re-applying the dielectric grease, second i disconected the hand control units, put a fuse into the positive side of my "flasher unit" and re-connected the Battery.
On turning the key aloud bang and all the lights went out, NO power to anything.
I disconnected the flasher unit and after i had another beer tried again, light come on this time till i re-connected the flaser unit, then the same again.
I'm over this shit, time for an expert.

Ok backbone and power harness installed, all the crap with flasher units 'BINNED". Once reconnected i had USA lights,,,,,,,, that is stop lights and blinkers as one even though i only have a ground and the blinker L and R wires, i had a Tag light and head light.

Mate came over and basicly tore wires out from this and that and direct conected them so i now have everything where it is supposed to be BUT no front brake light.......yet.

EHC working perfectly and no relays or flasher unit, even my blinkers are working as they should with incandesent bulbs.......................wtf.

I read somewhere on here that the WP unit can be programed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How is that it does not have any way of doing so??????

Just asking is all.

May have to change things back if and when the WP arrives and re-combobulate it again.
all i want is a bike i can ride in confidence,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,a bloody long way from the nearest BMD agent here in Aussie if you breake down.

Thanks to all that have assisted.

hi Jeff
Do you still have the led tail lights , that is all craig is still running . if you want a yellow flashing rear indicator give big bear a call on the sunshine coast ( if the are still there ) and they had some that they use in there bikes . We had to change one of the k9s to a wire plus system about 6 mths ago and it has been going great since .

That's pretty easy (I was told how to do this by Lewis here in the forum).

You take the wire that has a minus pole and goes on/ off when pushing the front brake under the tank
take the same off at the wires at the foot brake
and put them on a switch that you have to install.

This will be your new extra electrical circuit for the brakes. This is now OUTSIDE the EHC!! No probs here so!

The blinkers/indicators or whatever you call 'em are still actuated by the EHC.

That is all and it works fine on my Pitbull.

As I told you - it is not my knowledge.....

This are my rear lights from Shin Yo (chinese :job: - but work). May be you can get 'em in Australia too:

SHIN YO | Onlineshop fr Scheinwerfer, Rcklicht, Blinker und LED

They have 3 electrical circuits (blinker, rear and stop light) and are smaller than the BDM ones :2thumbs:.
