woods .650 and deck work

I picked the bike up yesterday from having the Woods .650 cam, valve springs and deck work done. Guess what cam came out...the S&S 600. Also, triple coil valve springs. It also had roller rocker arms in it.

He didn't measure the differences in the cams but he said by eye they looked very similar so I might have wasted a few quid here which is a bit of a bastard. You live and learn.

Rode it home in the rain, in the dark, with dark sunglasses on - oops! Not a great time to really give it the beans but it did feel very solid, presumably due to having .060 cut off the deck height. He didn't check the compression but he guessed at about 10.2 ish. I guess thats not too far away. He said each cylinder was a different height before he did the work, which is apparently not uncommon.

When I get a good blast on it I'll report back.

If anyone wants the cam and springs give me a shout. I've no idea on the value but I'm guessing $150 for the lot seems fair - if I'm taking the piss I'm sure you'll all let me know.

150 in US bucks or those quids? :D

I will bet that 650 gives you great top end power.

US bucks - you might be right with the top end thing but I want it to give me low - mid range torque - thats what I said to Bob Wood and this is what he receommended - we'll see - watch this space....I will say this though, the bike sounds a little different, in a good way

Glad you have it running.

Visually comparing two cams won't tell you much. Remember you're looking for differences expressed in thousands of an inch and lobe placement expressed in a few degrees. Almost invisible to the naked eye but not to your engine.

thanks Black Dawg thats good to hear - as I say I'll let you know how it runs when I can get out for a good blast

If you bought the bike brand new, there is now way it had a .600 cam. .569 is more like it in 05.

I didn't buy it brand new - it had 2300 miles on it when I bought it last year

Glad you got it back on the road Lee. Those break-in miles are very hard to hold back on the throttle. Going through that issue myself.

Then you're gain isn't going to be as big as you thought. I am going to guess the compression added 5-7 horsepower, and the cam added around the same. Let us know how you like the camshaft.

That woods cam should give you the low end you are looking for Lee...from what I have read it is the ticket! I know I lost some low end when I went from the stock cam to the S&S 600, but man did the mid and top end open up...whew!

yeah I may not get the gain I was expecting hence why I said in my first post that I may have wasted my money. Having thought about it I don't think I have but time will tell. Larry, you don't need to run a cam in. Tx I hope you're right. Dave - I got the IST ignition to go in yet and Jakes HID light and oil filter. As soon as thats all done I'll get a video done. To be continued...

cool Lee.....now you can compare your .600 cam that you were running to the .650 Woods.....curious to hear what kind of difference you have..

Well, it won't really be a fair comparison, since he cut the jugs also...if it were just a cam swap alone, then that would be a good a/b test.

Man I can't wait to hear what you think of the difference from the 600 to the 650 woods.

Kinda crazy that you already had the 600. Maybe from the previous owner.

I knew the original owner had changed the cam but all I knew was that he had put in a "mild" cam, which I didn't assume the .600 to be a "mild" cam. tx - you're absolutely right...it is not a straight comparison of one cam against another because of the jug work. It was good to hear he had also put rollers in, although I think they are still the TP rocker boxes.
