Wolf - EHC Help Please

Hi All,

So, after being the proud owner of my new 2010 Wolf for two whole days, it died and me and the shop tells me the EHC has gone. Apparently it's getting power into the module but nothing is coming out of it, stone dead they reckon. Does this sound right to you guys? I thought the EHC in the later models was supposed to be more reliable no? And what options do I have now? Nothing but the Wire Plus I guess?

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

deadone customs has a system and wild steed works is working on one. Theres the m unit or wire plus. I you have the time I would wait for the wsw unit because you can be assured it will be right and he will stand behind it.

my computer has about 40000 miles on it and 7 years, I think most do well - what they are telling you sounds right but - most all the shop I have used over the years really have no clue. If you do not have a shop manual you need to get one , as well as manual on engine from S&S. with both of them and this site you can fix things yourself and no they are done right. there is a lot on here about bad EHCs but where are more bigdogs that have had no problem.

Ok I've been doing a bit more reading up and found this German M Unit that some people have fitted, would that work on my Wolf do you think?

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the advice. I think my shop guys are pretty good, they know more than me that's for sure, and I know a lot of people have had no problem with their EHC, I just can't believe mine broke just two days after I got the bike, what are the odds? Luckily I did get the full service manual from BDPP before they went under and the shop have it to aid in their diagnostic. We shall see.

DOC has the more personal motivation to get the electronics right than anyone. And since the ESC has a one year guarantee it seems to me DOC is standing pretty solid behind their product!! :2thumbs:

I agree with Dennis, I would pull your EHC and have it tested, call Curtis to make sure he can test it for you.

Agree with all above...........So many of these issues turn out to be something other than the EHC...take the time and send it to WSW for testing BEFORE you spend big bucks on something you don't need. Unless the shop you're using is with familiar w/Big Dog electronics I personally would question any recommendation made by them. You can read for yourself probably 50 posts on this site where the EHC was the first thing suspected to be wrong...then later the problem turned out to be something else.

Many, many thanks for the advice guys, very much appreciated and I will do as you suggest and send my EHC for testing before I do anything else. I guess to look on the bright side I wouldn't have been riding my bike at all for the next six months, winter being upon us and all, so better this happens now then next April, that would really have yanked my chain.

I agree with the guys to have your EHC checked. In my experience, usually a much more simple problem is the culprit (ex. breaker popped or FET transistor, bad battery or batt connections, LED lights, bad ground somewhere, etc.). If you find your EHC is truly bad, BigDogPartsKing has some and we at Kansas Motorcycle Works are also working on an EHC replacement kit for all models. We are starting with the Wolf and 03 Choppers since BDM didn't launch those. We hope to have these available before the end of the month. Just waiting on a supplier right now. Shoot me an e-mail at Matt@kansasmotorcycleworks.com if you are interested.

We plan to cover all of the models 2003 and later with a plug-and-play system because that is the bulk of the Big Dog motorcycles on the road. We can make it work for the earlier models but just e-mail me if you need that and we will custom-make one for you. Is there one you are looking for/needing?

Not at this time. I changed My 07 Bulldog to the wire plus and my 07 K9 is running fine with the original ehc, just covering my bases and glad to know that there is some plug and play replacements in the works. Keep up the good work.

Got my new EHC from Big Dog Parts King, very prompt and professional service there so thanks one and all for the tip, and it seems to be lighting up correctly where the old one didn't so now to try and start her up. Fingers crossed.

And she lives, starts on the button and all is well again. I'm going to replace the battery as well though, it is date stamped June 2009 so I think it may not be holding it's charge well and that may have contributed to the EHC meltdown. Can't be too careful. Thanks again for all the tips and words of advice, much appreciated.
